I hope everyone made it back home in one piece, there was a fair bit of destruction by the time came to go home!
Not much snow this time just some bits left over from the last dump.
Everyone made it to the glacier lake in one bit after a "discussion" with a DOC ranger but all smiles at the end of the day.
I made a newbie mistake of trying to drive over a boulder 30 cm taller than the mitsy's ground clearance but was soon on it's way again after jacking and throwing rocks under the tyres. ( my apologies for Hillfilly's finger :o ).
A bit of swift winching sorted out a bent track rod and kbjj did a bit of woodcarving to get home after breaking a spring.
I'll leave details of the VX cruiser saga to those involved, if they have made it back yet!

By the way, does anyone know what breed the spider in the photos is?

Great photos...Diogenese...

Back in Rolleston in one piece.

My new truck went well... :D :D :D made all the way to the glacier lake without needing a single tow :D :D :D :D

Not so the trip back to the hut... so really easy to miss the track in the dark and end up in the river without a paddle....   thanks for the tow out Diogenese... (Matty)

So far post trip...only found a slight modification to the passenger step... and a loud squawking...... will really find out when I get home

Finger less black...my own silly fault for catching it between the rocks   Thanks for the gloves Reece.

Great to meet up with Jeremy, Kelsey, Tony , Jarren again and nice to meet Matty, Reece, Andy and Sam.

Another trip full of great driving, brilliant conversations and heaps of kidding, joking an laughs. ( remember it is my torch Tony....) :D :D :D

More of an up date and a few photos later.......

The photos don't show the scale of the place, apart from the long panorama.

I know one thing for sure, I'm not waiting another year till I go up there again! I'd probably be there this weekend if I wasn't on call :(

The spider was only about 10-15mm long.

Pretty rocky at the end, surprised that the mitsubishi made it! Damn good job I had a long bash plate or I would have smashed in my front diff.

On the spider front I emailed Phil Servid at Te Papa's entomology department to see if he had any ideas, just got this reply.
Dear Matty,It's not often I have to admit defeat, but I genuinely don't know what that one is. I've got a colleague coming in tomorrow and we'll get our heads together to see what we can make of it together.  There are plenty of new species of spider still to be collected and described here in NZ. It's possible you may have found one of them. It might be a member of the family Zoridae but these are so poorly known in NZ, it's hard to be sure without a specimen to examine closely. If I haven't gotten back to you by Friday, please feel free to remind me.Regards,Phil Sirvid Entomology Section Museum of New Zealand Te Papa

Hi Matty,My colleague and I have had a look. We're not completely sure what you have, but wonder if it might be a male of the water spider Dolmedes aquaticus. The size is right and what we can see of the eyes is not a bad match  but the colour is a lot greyer than we're  used to seeing. There is a lot of colour variation in these spiders so it wouldn't be a shock to find one with a colour scheme like this. If we had a clearer view of the head end we could be a bit more certain.

I'll send my other snaps and see what happens:-)

Hi Im looking at going up the Godley valley as a day trip from Tekapo.
How long does it take to get from the hut to the glacier lake? If to long wont bother.
Imagine it will take a couple hours to get from lillybank to the hut

Thanks
