Australia. Sure, why not????
Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
Thats not bad I was pegging a crack at 3 ton given your liquid load
Hmmm ditch the anchor you have a shovel and a spare wheel to dig in as an anchor lol
ditch the ratchet spanners go get a set of double open enders from a good brand.... in four spanners you will cover every combination you'll need
I would also add a big mosquito net that you can hang inside and leave the truck doors open
As for the solar option check out AULRO.com lol they will tell you what you need and where to get it and to be honest wouldn't surprise me if a few wouldn't be keen to show you around

Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
I'll try and get it over the weigh bridge before we go, it will be interesting to see if I'm close.
It weighs 1900kg from factory, and I reckon I must have pulled out at least 100kg or so of seats and trim, and saved an incredible amount by swapping rear diffs. My cupboards and cabinetry weigh half what the seats and trim did.
So at 2800kg that's 900kg of extra shit on board and a potential 200kg's of that is fuel and water if/when fully loaded.
You got me curious now, might go to the weigh bridge tomorrow

Thought this might be of interest to someone.
How do you take a cordless drill with you and keep the batteries charged??
My solution:
Take one shitty 12V cordless drill that the batteries died long ago on, and modify to get rid of the battery clip on the handle
Then take a piece of two core wire you have lying around, some aligator clips and a couple of spade terminals, and there you have it, a nice little drill that will never go flat provided the engines running
The wire is going to be changed for something lighter gauge, but that's all that was lying round at the time when I was feeling creative

Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
Righto, put it over the weight bridge today
As it stands here in the photo, we are doing a shake down trip this weekend, so it's fully loaded with everything, food, tools, parts, two spare wheels, recovery gear, clothes, 50L of water and 125l of fuel, pretty much everything on that list I posted earlier.
2560kg
It could have another 40L of water on board and another 40L of fuel if required, so a max of 2640kg.
I'm happy with that

Not bad given the list
Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
got to be happy with that !
going through your list , how many sets of jumper leads do you have on board .
ideally you would want to be able to hook up 3 battery's for bush welding , ie 36volts . prob have to beg borow the 3rd whille on tour.
Are the front door monsoons from LRS ? they look real good !

OMG I may have something to contribute to this most excellent topic.
My portable worklight (Supercheap) has alligator and cigi-lighter connections, on a nice long lead. Buy one (cheap as chips) and re-purpose the leads, would be handier if you need to drill something in the cab

Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
A rough route plan:
Up north, a few detours if all is going well.
Across a bit of the Savannah Way, might head further along if it's all going well, then down to Alice.
This is roughly the route through the central region:
I'm going to head across the Simpson Desert from Mt Dare to Birdsville following the French Line,
Then down through Innaminka and through the Strzelecki Desert. Coober Pedy is worth a look, the town is almost completely underground, and from there we will head to the Flinders Ranges for a nosey around.
Then we head back to Hervey Bay for a clean up ready for shipping back to NZ.
That's one rough plan any way
I'm working on the distance, but so far it's looking like 16,000kms give or take 1,000ks, and that's with out any side trips and ticky touring.
Just to put the distance into perspective
The whole of Europe overlaid over Australia:
And little ol' NZ overlaid over Australia (with Antarctica in the back ground)
I'm still struggling to get my mind to comprehend the distances. One of the problems growing up in a small island nation I guess

That looks so awesome, mate you deserve to have a brilliant trip, seriously hope its all and more than you anticipate.
Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
This is also going to be a handy resource, its a shame its only going to be accessible when we have 3G, but even so, i should still be able to plot the potential camp sites onto the Hema app in advance when reception is available.

Extremely envious , You've obviously done all your homework and planning...have you thought of liaising with other 4wd forums in Australia?. Some guys over there might be keen to join you for a day trip or help you out if you have a breakdown etc.
NICE Landy by the way..very noice - 2560kg was about what my swb Safari weighed last time I put it over the weighbridge...with just me and half a tank of fuel .

I have been a paid up member of AULRO for a few years now since we started planning the trip. That forum has been awesome in terms of vehicle set up, places to go and see, and most importantly the best places to go to get parts when on the road
Between the AULRO forum, 4x4earth, youtube and the odd magazine there's just about everything you need to know
This is gonna be handy too, courtesy of AULRO:

Give the frenchline across the simpson a miss. everyone takes it, it's rough and boring. If you take the southern tracks you will have less dickheads to deal with, better things to look at and smoother roads. Looks like a good trip DB. I'm heading out that way myself next winter doing a big triangle from Burke and Wills dig tree to Flinders ranges via Strezleski track, Ooandatta track, Ulura and Olgas, Macdonnell Ranges, Alice, Ghan, Mt Dare, Simpson Birdsville, Burke and Wills Dig tree...4 weeks in total in the desert. Enjoy mate.

That sounds like a good piece of advice Al, I had read similar on AULRO, people towing their camper trailers through the Frenchline had wrecked it, and it's getting worse every year.
What route would you recommend?? Do the WAA line??
Cheers,
Pete.

Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
yep WAA line mate. I have just read a trip report from the Simpson on the Patrol forum...Frenchline is at it's worst. If you type "simpson desert" into google you'll come up with a lot of stuff that you have to sort thru and it will give you a good feel for past and current conditions. Mt Dare has it's own website with good info on track. This will be the most isolated you will get on your trip.

Cheers Flag, I have no doubt it will be!!!!!!
For those that are interested, here's a quick a vid of the Simpson Desert. It doesn't really portray the 1100 sand dunes you have to cross, but you get an idea of the vastness
Bit of a Cape York vid too:
Nolans brook is a worry, its got a soft sand bottom and you wouldn't want to get stuck at that depth!!!

About 450 to 500ks depending on the route through. 3 to 4 days driving if you just drive, we might go for 5 or 6 if the temperatures ok and fuel consumption is as good as I hope.

Re: Australia. Sure, why not????
I have been preparing the vehicle and our selves to do the whole trip solo.
July and August are peak times for both the Cape and the Simpon, being in the middle of the open season, so we won't be alone.
The plan up the cape is to stay at one of the popular camp sites before we get to Nolan's Brook and make sure we have a company for that crossing
I'm sure tyres down at 18psi and the correct amount of momentum it will be fine. There's lots of videos of failed attempts, but how much of that is due to lack of knowledge, experience, skill and to much beer???

I did alot of research at work to find something that would allow you to check-in, ask for pickup etc... We have used them in Fiji, Borneo, Panama, all over the place..
That's awesome, cheers for that link, I had no idea something like that existed
That's the cost of hiring a Sat Fone for two weeks, and way more versatile than an over priced PLB.
Cheers
