recommend places to go south island.

Postby Lchundy » Tue Jan 19, 2016 5:26 pm

I'm starting to think about a south island trip Feb or March next year for 7-10days maybe more
I've done it few times before but never really did my homework on places to go.
There's 2 trucks so far and it's more a getting out there camping by lakes scenic views etc.not winch challenge mud bogs.
So after some local knowledge on places to go or if you want to meet up and show us northerners what were missing out on!
Advice much appreciated.

How far south are you planning on heading?
There are lots of cruisey tracks down here.
Mackley Iron Bridge to Denniston, On the Denniston Plateau there is enough 4wding and sight seeing to fill in a day. Mt Frederick is a good drive.
Rainbow road then head into Maling Pass, Edwards Valley,
Napoleons hill below Reefton
Cock Eye Creek and No Name road near Greymouth

Serpentine church track is really good and you can camp at Lake Onslow, the whole area is pretty cool. Then its pretty easy to head up the old man range to.

It isn't really 4wd worthy but worth it for the drive and views.

Easy drives but you should do Skippers Canyon, Macetown and Nevis Valley from Bannockburn if your down that way

Macauley hut in from Tekapo - along with a day trip up the Godley Valley on your way in or out. Open access.

Cool
Yeah open access is a must don't really want to piss off private land owners

One question guys I'm planning a similar trip with wife & dog December.
Got Nevis Road & Molesworth station (Only interested in transit 4WD track)

Is Old Man Range road a traverse to piano flat ok with a solo? looks like a pretty long drive & a bit of a bad track record...

Vehicle is a
94 GQ Patrol LWB Hitop,
Winch,33" Dynapro Mts, 2" Lift.
(Thinking of traction boards too)
