Del Fuego's Lada

Postby Del Fuego » Fri Feb 24, 2012 4:37 pm

Ok, I am picking this bad boy up on Saturday and figured I should start a build thread of sorts... not that I have many plans other than drive, break, repair, rinse, repeat. But also figure a good spot for discussions around tyre choice etc etc

I will likely slap a coat of paint on it due to it's horrendous ugliness. however most important thing right now is tyres... I am trying to figure out the best way to go.

It isn't going to be road legal (at least at this stage) so I just want some grunty muds that won't ruin the gearing... not too worried about height as such as I'm happy to trim/raise stuff to make it work, just want the best combo for the little thing.

So, best height and width? I have done a bit of reading and it sounds like up to about 32 is ok... but not sure about width... horribly tempted to put a set of 34" swampers on it but fairly sure the thing will cease to move lol.

Actually, maybe this should be in the "projects/mods" section?

a mate of mine brought one of those about 10 years ago, well probably more of a mate of possums than mine but anyway we thought he was taking the piss when he said he'd brought this mint lada for $5k off some old joker and it was a steal, turned out he did pay $5k for it    he busted the steering box on the first trip out in the bush and it was a prick of a job to swap it out after he went and found another one, we had to pull half the shit out of the engine bay and drop an engine mount and push the engine over, I'm pretty sure I read that the steering boxes are piss weak on those things so you may want to bear that in mind when your out there snotting it on the tracks like he was :D

lol, fortunately I paid less than a fifth of that :D, yeah will try not to break anything till at least second trip out... but a good reason for smaller rather than larger rubber if ever I heard it lol

I have a sizeable spares collection, so you can dive into it whenever you want. So long as you replace the bits you took out eventually :D

Hey Del Fuego,

The paint job is not to bad on the Lada the black and white looks good, not to sure on some of the sticker's tho

Looks like it will do better than the Navara.

Hopefully this will motivate Lewis to get is Lada going  only seen it out at the Pig Farm.

Cheers

hey mate
definatly check out Baxters site. everything ya need is on there.
also Im looking at getting some parts out of ladaworld.com (done so before, good company to deal with) let me know if your keen so we can save on freight.
In regard to tyres from whjat ive learnt. I think the biggest ya can go is about 29' without a lift.
Im planing on 30x9.5x15 on mine with a 2" lift.
I believe as soon as ya go bigger than 31" youl have to start triming wheel arches to fit.
keeping the tyre nice and skinny will save ya steerring and ya wheelbearings.... for a wile....
From what iv herd, unless ya have got grunt then there is no point with wide tyres. skiny is better for mud with a light veh as itll cut thru instead of sitting on top... (dont quote me on this but just form talking to a few ppl)

Definatly looks like a good toy though
look foward to hittin woodhill with you and sp
come on sp get is sorted Ill come give ya a hand aswel
(If we all keep harasing him he might just get it saughted.

Well, she is at home... let's say she should be a fairly good base to work with.

Seller translation:

Rust in the normal places, but I have sorted these - means - Rust in normal places, now filled with expanding foam

project that I have worked on for the last 3 years - means - I filled the holes with space invader and used blocks of wood in various places.

hmmm

Ok well to be honest I'm not too fussed about the rust but I will pull the foam out and use her to practice my welding, ended up home late last night so havn't had a chance to see how bs his claims of mint brakes/clutch/gearbox.. hopefully they aren't full of foam too but shall report back.

Need to suss out the electrics too, only the indicators work via the trailer plug but that shouldn't be to complex.

today I am going to go pick up the new rubber from up north

I take it you've checked out my Niva site?

If not, start here: http://ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/newbies.htm and then check out http://ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/index.htm

There's some info on tyre size, and extensive info on Niva lifts there. Check out the Auzzie Niva forum (linked from my site), they were making runs of lift kit bits last year.

Also I'd ditch those Suzuki rims as they're the wrong off-set and can cause issues (like the broken steering-box mentioned above), and see if you can find some Lada 16" rims or the dealer fitted Lada 15" white spokes.

Sucks about the bs repairs, luckily most Nivas have reasonably decent steel to weld. When you've sorted the body check out the yearly maientence for the body in the back of the mannual (oiling in little holes etc) so it stays good.

Speaking of the manual, if you haven't already, download it from Gadgetboy's site (linked from mine) - it's very handy to have, and as most things on a Niva are pretty DIY you'll soon loose some of your technologically retardedness ;)

Cheers Baxter, I have indeed trawled your site many times now haha, I'm looking forward to getting into some mods/maintenance/getting her dirty.

Picked up some 16's and tyres although they are off a suzuki also, hopefully I won't have too many issues with them but will figure it out soon enough and maybe keep an eye out for some lada items in the meantime :)

Thanks for the advice:)

Any idea where one would procure a Hoodoo2 type lift kit locally/somewhere that speaks english for not too many pennies?

Im in the process right now of making up some wedge spacers for under the front spring base plate, I will be having a crack at modifying the spring plate to still fit sway bar for mine. but I take it youll probably be getting rid of SB in yours. ill let you know how I go may be able to help ya out with wedges.

I do need to figure out where to get, or how to make up myself, the front ball joint spacers tho.

Also I got a mate that got some spacers made on request for his jeep for not to much about $40 pair. He cant remember the name of the company but the crowd is down south auk somewhere. should be the way for the rear I recon, if I can find them....

will then need to lenghten the rear brake load sensor bar that goes to diff aswell.

Good work on the Niva, you will have heaps of fun in it!!!

30x9.5 tyres are the biggest you want to go even with the lift. you lose too much in the gearing after that. I had BFG muds on mine (before the Silverstone extremes) and they rubbed a little bit at full artic but the gearing was ok for most stuff. I now have 31 Extremes but only went up to 31 as this was the smallest size in the extreme type tread I could get.(but I have 4.7:1 diffs in it now)

have a peek at my build and it has some pics of the wedges and a few mods.

keep up your progress reports looking fwd to seeing another mean lada around.

Hit the lada with a grinder, and removed most of the stickers... it was surprisingly pleasurable.

anyone know what I can use to dissolve/kill the stupid foam (Edit: Acetone?)... I have a feeeling that when I hit it with the mig the foam/entire car will be engulfed in flames... which isn't the effect I'm going for.

Post that I have to figure out what I'm gonna do about recovery hooks as the normal deal won't work due to 8 tons of steal used to attach the A-Frame... in fact that rig is going to annoy me fast due to hanging 8 miles under the car no doubt causing it to hang on every obstacle... grrr

I am thinking perhaps a different front bar with hooks and a-frame attached to that? or can I perhaps bolt the hooks to the existing bar... hmmm... pics just because they are fun?

And in case anyone has suggestions for my Hooks/A-Frame/Bar issues here's the current setup:

wow some one was definatly stoned or something when they did thoes rust repairs thats hilairyass......

Yea the front set up look prity average indeed :? . have a look at the way nivapulled out did his front end. I did the same with mine and am prity happy with it, does involve a bit of work tho.

got the steel (nivapulled out expect a pm). Also found a guy that can cnc machine up some front BJ spacer for me. should hear back from him tomorow about price. said he can also do alloy spring spacers but I think Id rather have nylon or polybush ones. will keep posted.

Cheers dude, will check out nivapulled build... just concerned about how to re-attach the A-Frame, but it definitely needs rethinking, I may just pull it all off and see what I can see.

yeah keep us up to date about the spacers, I know SP is keen to sort something out too... I can get a whole set spacers, wedges, bj spacers etc from a top gent in aus for $120 which is pretty reasonable

Remember that if you're fitting wedge spacers under the spring seat, you MUST either remove the sway bar, or fit the end below the spring seat. It you don't, the trackrod end will foul and catch on the bar end under full lock / articulation, and the steering will stick in that position! Look at www.channel19.demon.co.uk for a photo strip of how we did Excossack's Niva.
