Flasher relay

Postby JesperDK » Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:31 am

Hi lada club
hope someone can help me, i bought a niva 2121 project.
i found that the flasher didn’t work when i used the signal arm or the distress contact, so my repair manual says change flasher relay, so i bought a new one, and here is my problem, my new one don’t look like the old on.
the old one has 3+1 terminals called X,P and L
and my new one has 5 terminals called C, C2, 31, 49 and 49a.

I’ve looked at the cars circuit diagram and i can’t figure out what goes where.
The only one i know where goes, is earth that goes to 31.
All the wires colors match the one in the diagram. http://www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resour ... wiring.jpg

I think you have got the wrong one...
Here is a link to Hella website with flashers..
The one like yours (can) is at the top of the list..
The 5 one is down the page...
It also shows the basic wiring...

thanks, so just so o get this right, some of the five cables i got i my niva goes to the same pin?
It would be great if some could upload at picture of a flasher relay installed in a Niva.
I just think it's wierd that the wiring diagram shows 5 different wire go in to the relay 5 different places

Now to cause confusion! Mine has a straightforward plug with four wires that plugs into the flasher unit. Can only fit one way round. Have you got the correct relay? It's on the bulkhead just to the left of the dash centre, and you have to fiddle a bit to get at it. It's held by a 10mm (or 8MM) nut.
While you're at it, that may not be the problem. Check the wires that run down the steering column behind the plastic shroud. They have a habit of rubbing against the column UJ and shorting out.

3 pin fitted now with only 3 wire to hook to?
shoot to repco/appco/pan pacific and grab one of the correct ones, plug it in, check all your bulbs are going. boom.

thank for all the answers.
I'm pretty sure it's the right relay i bought, it allso looks right compared to the wiring diagram for that car model.
That plug your all talking about, has been removed by a previous owner, to fit the relay in the picture.
I've tryed connecting the new relay in diffenrent way with no luck, so now i'm thinking that it could be something else.

But i would still like if some one could take a picture of how the wires are connected to the relay, so i can be sure it's corect connected

I would ignore the wiring diagram and copy what is already there...
Try another 3 pin.....
Reading thru some of the niva forums... the 4 or 5 pin relays can be swapped for a 3 pin

Google is your friend

I agree with Calvin. On the presumption that the original worked at one time, replace like for like.

No not yet, but when i get it working i will let you know :-)
But i'm beginning to think the i could be a bad ground connection or a erroded plug somewhere, my niva had stood still for about 7 years before i bought it, so it could be many thinks :-(

Good to hear! I do like it when a plan comes together! Mind you, I have to fiddle when electrics start acting up - very much trial and error!

John.
