yeah you won't believe it i am actually doing some mods to the g
first thing i need to deal with is the springs
as you can see it sits a little low at the back which is a bit of an issue best seen in this pic
notice how you can't actually see the diff previously when 4wding i have been dragging my tank everywhere
so decided i need some height
about 100mm on the back and 80 on the front looks about right
looks better from the side too
then yorick and i thought wonder what it would look like with 33 inch mudzillas
must admit have finalised the tyre size yet we are still debating that yorick reckons 33s but i think why bother going half way better with 35s what do you guys reckon

Re: g force
There is a little disagreement here I agree so I did a little GIMP modification to the pics and upsized the Paj's Buckshots to 35 for the purposes of comparison
and compare that to the 33s
Now personally I think it's all about proportions and the 35's are too big but the 33's look perfectly matched, obviously made for it.

Re: g force
Are you putting your turbo charged engine into it??
Are the diffs 8" or 9"???
IF you have 8" diffs, you could get away with 33's most likely, you also have factory twin lockers remember!!!!!!
BUT............................
If you wanna be THE MAN and drive EVERYTHING, figure out if you can squeeze the 35's under there. Especially if your fitting the turboed engine!!!!!!
Oh, and Dad's are always offering conservative advice, you don't HAVE to listen ALL the time

How much trimming will you need to fit the bigger shoes on?
I say if you can't get there with 33's, will 35's make any difference.

But the 33s just look better, more in proportion. 33's on the G are like Terri Hatcher's Breasts, BEEEyoootifully proportioned for the chassis, whereas 35s would be like Pamela Anderson's, sure there's a lot traction, but the bouncing would get boring eventually and that's with out even mentioning the CoG!
DB wrote:Oh, and Dad's are always offering conservative advice, you don't HAVE to listen ALL the time
It is a Dads role to always offer unsolicited advise as he sees fit and to make the life of Daughters Male acquaintances a misery! Both rules are in the constitution... somewhere!
Re: g force
I'd say 35"s as a minimum why not just admit your gona get the bug and keep at it... save yourself some money and go get 44" boggers mind you thats only my experiance
More to the piont is can you get taller ratios for the diffs?? that should be your main decider, asuming your standard tires are 30"s then the jump to 35"s will mean a 16% jump in rolling diameter or around that sort of loss in torque ... the 33"s are only a 10% jump
as for diffs don't listen to them, a lower ratio 8" is plenty strong enough if setup right... for 35"s hell the americans are crawling on high ratio 8's with 39-44" rubber allright they are on aftermarket gears but talk to Jafa, he's got Yukon gears at a very nice price G wagons are popular enough in europe they should make some options
Hey Merc if your tank is an issue why not fix it, instead of lifting the whole truck .... cut the floor out and mount it higher then weld the floor back in a bit higher simple

i can get 6.17:1 from mercedes benz about 600 euros each

because it is a plastic tank with the 100mm lift on the back it does lift it right up out of the way and since there isn't much of an overhang i don't think it will be much of an issue

yes finally
took the head off the other week and found this
hmm that doesn't quite look right so have ordered new one and valve guide plus a set of valve seals
it has an interesting set up on the valves it is an overhead cam and the valves are adjusted basically with a locknut and capped nut on the end of the valve
so will put the new one in this weekend
not forgetting to attach this thing
should give me close to 120 hp a bit of a step up from the 88 it has at the moment and i am thinking about an intercooler as well apparently they do help quite a bit on these engines

Good to see it getting some mods - but trust me, buy the biggest tyres you can fit on it, if you don't then you'll just wish you had the first time you get stuck - if you get stuck with the biggest tyres you can fit then at least you can say "Well, theres no room for more rubber, so I'll have to mod something else"

that is my theory as well so why stop halfway with 33s when i can get 35s especially as i am not intending to use them as my road tyres i already have a 2 sets of 16 x 5.5 inch rims to run road going tyres on

Re: g force
Yeah go with the big tyres...... its a bloke thing
See if you can borrow some to try first and see how the G Force handles the tall gearing and what the power and torque loss is like before you spend the dollars commit yourself

bit difficult to borrow tyres to fit a g wagen unless you know someone with a porsche on mud tyres

I see now..... I looked a bit closer at those pic's and the 33 Paj tyres were just sitting under the wheel arches and wernt bolted on.... unless theres some way you can fit 6 stud wheels to 5 stud hubs that I dont know about?
I guess it will be a bit difficult to try somebody elses 35's out then
Re: g force
okay made some progress on the g friday made a small start decided to make a bit of space around the engine to make the job a little bit easier so removed a couple of things that were in the way
right so after playing silly buggers yesterday at thompsons got stuck into the g again today
now i have an empty space to put a new motor
right will see what i get up to tomorrow might get the replacement trans and short block in still waiting for parts so haven't got the head back on the motor but we can do that after the motor is in place

Re: g force
bugger
so i put my new rear springs in today after i replaced the wheel bearings and seals and well umm i think there has been a error somewhere along the way
the distance between the top of my tyres and the wheel arch is now 250mm so i could fit 38s without too much hassle but i don't want to go that big have to send them back i think
i am not sure whether to try fitting the front ones as they feel harder than the old ones and are quite a bit longer than the originals
to be honest the front ones look like they may need to remake them
yorick did ring them when they got delivered and said they don't look right they said try them and if there are issues send them back and they will sort them out
another thing that came out of this is that i need new shocks the current ones have the thread on one end and the eye on the other and as a result they do bind up a at full droop the shocks i pulled out have a bit of a bend in them
still got more work to do tomorrow will attack the engine and trans did get the new valve guide in today so will get the valve bedded or whatever you call it and then hope to get the head on and reassemble the rest of it ready for the transplant
