Today a small group of 4 vehicles, consisting of myself, Dace & Tony, Tony Nizafari & Curly, and Crizpy & Mark did a trip into Manakau via Waikawa reserve.
It didn't appear that the track had been used by 4x4's since I was last in there back in April this year. We started off with a little tree pruning on the way as required, until we hit a massive windfall of rather large tree's on the down side of the track. Rather than turn around and head back, we all got stuck in with chainsaws etc, and within an hour had a passage through.
We continued on until we started climbing back up into the Tararua's and hit a rather large and very soft clay slip. I winched through, and Crizpy started his winch up and through until his synthetic winch rope spat the thimble off. We decided to turn round and head back down to the grassy paddock area by the river and have a late lunch.
After lunch we started the long and sometimes tricky climb back out to the top. We had several minor mishaps including myself, and Dace had plenty of tugs and ripped out a front brake line, which was fixed with a pair of vice grips and cable ties till we got out. It was a good day, good company, top weather and a good and sometimes challenging trip.
Photos to follow.

Some rather large centre washouts.
And got caught in one.
And so did Dace, and they are quite deep!
Tony had to try as well.
And Crizpy wasn't to be outdone either, but Mark bailed.
Taking a 15 minute break on the way out & enjoying the awesome view.
But we were keeping Nigel up, so decided to move on.
