The tow ball is clearly rated, but I don't see any rating or standard markings on the pintles?

Common theory is not to do recoveries from a tow ball, but its worth remembering why it is a common theory: 1 Most smaller tow balls aren't up to it and; 2 it is very easy for the strap/strop/rope to come off the tow ball while under tension.

A combination pintle like that shown has a rated tow ball and the strap/strope/rope can't come off when setup correctly. From an engineering point of view most early tow bars would fall off before the tow ball breaks, and this is still sometimes the case in this modern world.

Was waiting for some one to say that. I would like to think that I know a bit about the subject as I've been known to make the odd Towbar here and there. I would never recommend snatching off of a Towbar unless its been made for that in which case hooks would have been fitted and the TowBar itself designed to take it. The problem with most Towbars is they are built to a budget and in a lot of cases already fitted to the truck when you buy it. It might suprise people to know that Towbars do wear out and if it was fitted to the truck when you got it you would have no idea of the use its had. So the idea that you drill a few holes in the Towbar to mount your hook is not such a good one, it pays to check the mounts and bolts very carefully. I myself have seen more than once where the Towbar has been ripped out of the chassis. I'm sure there are plenty of Towbar places who like us would be happy to check your truck if you are unsure won't even cost you anything. We would rather not have a Towbar heading our way while trying to recover your truck

I have one on the back of my truck, and I have used it to snatch Nissans out of mud holes where they have been sucked into, haven't had a problem with it yet and as for the 'no towball' rule, I asked the same question to our now Central Zone Pres and she was fine with me having it and using it on one of the trips that I did a few years back at Taupo. I have never been turned away from a trip nor have I been asked not to use it when on a trip.

Very handy if you want to tow a trailer but don't want to have a separate towbar...

JTop did some tested a few years ago and a standard Pintle stalled his test rig at 20 ton's where the hooks were breaking left right and centre.

How much for the towball extension for the bike rack, or could you make a longer hitch receiver for the bike rack for me?

Cheers

Jerry wrote:My 10c

The Pintle and towball would appear to have a rating overall of 5 Tons , assuming this is metric that equates to 11023lbs, which is a bit more than a rated 10000lb hook, the "towball" on it is thicker than a standard one, the non towball ones are rated to 8 ton / 17636lbs

Most strops are rated to 8000lb/3.628 ton, The strop will give way first

some recoveries I've seen are people trying to pull the f..k off the hook or break the strop, if a gentle or good strop will not work then its maybe time to consider winching the stuck vehicle out or digging it a bit rather than "excessive stropping".

Mounting of these needs to be considered into the equation as these do not let go like the rated hooks do...., no point bolting it up to the back of your truck if you are using small/factory unrated bolts or there is not enough support behind it......with both my LJ's Stinky reinforced the mount and behind it to support it properly.

Like anything including rated hooks and strops if correctly fitted and/or used these are safe.....

I would really like someone to give me a bloody good answer as to how the ratings on these are worked out

would like to know now, before I go towing anyone tomorrow

just been outside with Sig and we were looking at my new pintle and he read the rating written on the towball, which scared the fuk out of me

so I shot inside to do an online conversion.............................

3 500 lb, lbs = 1 587.573 295 kilogram

not a happy camper anymore

can someone tell me I'm reading this all wrong and will be fine to tow tomorrow

you can test it on mine. I will go get stuck good and proper, then we attach the snatch strap to your tow ball but..... i'll put a second strop tied to the top of the strop, at your end, on to your tie down point, that should stop the missile effect if it does let go, as well as my dampner filled with rocks

A large part of the confusion I suspect is our crappy language.. English that is.. oh yeah and do not forget the Amercians!! oh and the fact that we used to do all this wierd stuff of weighing things in isolation form other countries.

A Ton does not equal a tonne unless you are in the US where a tonne is called a metric Ton (clear?
1 Ton = 2240 lb (an imperial measurement) (1,016.04691 kg Google convert)
1 tonne = 1000 kg (a metric measurement) (2,204.62262 lb Google convert)

Some other oddities.. the US and UK Ton are different again where US (if I remember right) is 2000lb where UK use the above 2240lb. There is also a short and long Ton but I have no idea the difference.

The pound is even more confusion with the Toy, merchant and wool all being different masses.. Happy Happy Joy Joy.. so...... I have done a quick search to find the international standards folk and it is all clear and explained well (yeah right) in the french site (damn that half time score!!!!) http://www.bipm.org/en/si/si_brochure/general.html

Has that cleared it up for you Skid?

cheers dude

you can imagine my confusion and worry at the sight of a minimal rating on the ball, the one I took off was rated higher than that.

I knew there had to be a logical explanation and the design of the pintle must have a shit load more strength in it than ya standard towbar tongue

surely the towball should be able to have a higher rating though

are my calcs wrong, coz I've only got it rated at 1.5 ton :? :? :?

OK, so the pintle had a few tests today etc etc etc

yes it works fine, bla bla bla

but I'm still curious to know why you would stamp 3500 lbs on a towball that should be rated a damn sight better than my original 3500 kgs rated towball :? :? :?
