Nankang mudstars - any good?
Nankang mudstars - any good?
Just about to buy a new set of muds - some road use but want good performance off road for Canterbury conditions i.e. mud, snow, river gravel and occasional clay etc. Previously had several sets of hankook RTO1 32s on my bighorn and they went very well - was getting about 40,000 ks from the first 6-7 ms before trading them in for new ones. However RTO1s no longer being made and hankook now have RTO3 - not quite as sharp and aggressive tread and fair bit dearer.
Looking at various options - gt radial adventuros etc - but wonder if anyone has experience of the korean nankang mudstars. How do they perform compared to other makes offroad, and what sort of mileage do they give. They are pretty cheap and the 33s are actually 32.2", but could be okay if they perform. Comments welcome.
Anyone know of a good place to get wholesale tyres?
Thanks, Mike

I ran nankangs on my truck and the went really well especialy for what you pay,
I work for Beaurepairs and been in tyres for a few years now, sold a heap of nankang n889's ,big forestry tyre due to giving huge milage and chunky grip in my area (Gisborne) not sure wot they like in snow as it dont snow much up here but in my opinion they are gud for the price, Maxxis does the identical tread pattern called a Buckshot Just as good but twice the price.

mudstars are more round the 200 mark each buckshots prob looking more round the 300 mark each, I c ant remeber exact prices but I do know the reason for going with the n889 was the price diference was huge and you wernt gaining much with the buckshots.

If your charging nigh on 300 notes for a buckshot, its no wonder you were selling more nankang.
I can get them $250.00 each and i believe 4wdbits is selling them at $259.00 each (http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails ... ductID=220) So not really double the price as you claim aye?

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
good to know then, they have obviously droped in price since the last tym I orderd them and if the buckshots are 250 you might aswell get them over the nankang just for the quality diference.
I changed to the dunlop MT 1's recently, I have only been out once on them but they seem to clean themselves realy well compared to my earlier sets and they werent to bad on price, under a grand for the set with tubes.. something to think about, theres a lot out ther to choose from and Prices change a lot between brands so do a bit of shopping around..

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
had trouble getting up onto the back lawn yesterday in 2wd
had to have a couple of goes up the 30 degree slope and then have a big run up to get up
went to get into truck today and noticed back tyres clogged full and not clearing
I still think they're a good tyre for what I want

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Have bought a set of nankang mudstar N889 33s since asking topic question above. Good chunky tread with exc 15-16m depth. Only done 1200ks so far but exc on road - usual mudgrip hum but not noisy. Rated Q which is up to 160kph - and track v well on road at 100ks.
Have only done a couple of offroad excursions so far and found they bit well on steep grass climbs, performed quite well in river shingle and in a bit of slick mud. Early days but am happy with them to date. So if as suggested above they do big ks, I'd say they'll prove excellent value at just $220 per 33" mud tyre, and may well end up a popular option for general offroading. Obviously if you want specific high performance mud tyres, you'll spend the extra and go for swampers etc. However at this early stage am happy with the N889 mudstars - well worth a look.

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Got them for $220 each balanced and fitted from Roadrunner Tyres , main south road Sockburn, Chch. See Errol and ask for club price.
Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Done a few offroad trips and good few ks on the nankang mudstar 33s now and happy to confirm they wear well - getting 5oooks per mm of tread depth which is pretty good on a lwb. Also the chunky tread pattern - similar to buckshot - is proving good for general offroading - snow, mud, grass, pea gravel etc. Not a specialist trials tyre but finding them good all-rounder - esp at the price. Well worth it for general 4wding.
Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
An update and comment on the Nankang Mudstar N889 mudgrips.
Have a set of 33s which have now done about 15,000ks and quite alot of club trips, and am very pleased with them as an allround 4x4 tyre.
They have used 2 to 2.5mm of tread after 15,000ks so are hard wearing - should do a good 80000ks if you ran them right out -that is if you keep wheels aligned and pressures right.
Also very happy with offroad performance. Have done snow, ice, mud, steep grassy hills, rocky trips etc and they handle all very well - no sidewall damage either. The big chunky tread surprisingly effective.
In all this is a darn good tyre. Good grip, good wear, durable, and VERY good value at their price. Have used alot of sets of muds and these mudstars are up wiith the best as an allround 4x4 mudgrip. Recommended.

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
I also run these and recommend them as a great value all round tyre. Done about 20thou on mine on road and likewise only a couple of mm wear. Seem to handle pretty much anything you can throw at them, and pretty tough, theyve been spun up on buried rocks and logs and no real damage a few nicks in some of the tread blocks. Sidewalls seem quite strong considering theres no side lugs like Wranglers or other more expensive tyres. Know of a couple of others running 33s and 32s also happy with them

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Yes - out on a canterbury club trip last weekend and another member also had a set of the N889 mudstar 33s - same as mine. Also likes them. Same report - good mileage and do well offroad. They are a budget price tyre but there's nothing budget about their performance! A punt that worked out! I think with recent round of price increases price has gone to about $250 - still $100 less than most 33s.
Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
yeah, i got them, and really like them, havnt tried anything else though.

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Yes a good punt on mine too. Was going to get Sumitomos, but they were out of stock in 33s next container was due in a month, Wranglers were out of stock too, guy said well there is these Nankangs i can get in overnite. So i decided to give them a try

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Just a progress report on the wear and performance of the 33" Nankang N889 Mudstars I puton my truck 18 months ago.
They have proved a darn good offroad tyre, biting well in all types of terrain. Also very pleased with wear as they have done over 30,000ks on my lwb and still haven't used half tread. I would estimate they will do round 75-80,000ks if run right out. Does need to be rotated front to rear every 6000ks.
In all, good performance and very good mileage at a budget price. If you want a genuinely good all round mudgrip but don't want to spend much, go for it.
From experience, I recommend this tyre.

Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Quite a few dealers have them so you'll have to make a few phone calls. Price probably $270ish. Paid $220 for mine 18 months ago - very good deal.
Re: Nankang mudstars - any good?
Update on performance of the Nankang N889 Mudstar muds. Just notching up 40,000ks now and tread is still 9.5mm from original 15.5 tread depth. That's less than half wear for 40ks and on a lwb truck.
Exceptional wear for any mudgrip let alone a Taiwan cheapie. If you keep right tyre pressures to stop uneven crown or lug wear, keep aligned, and rotate every 6ks these muds could run out to 90-100,000ks. I'll sell them off at 8m when the tread is losing its bite but would expect they will be round 50,000k at that point.
And after 2 years 4wding trips with them have found them a very good all-round off roader. Big chunky tread pattern bites well, and no punctures.
Was a bit of a punt but this tyre is emerging as one of the best all-rounder muds you can get. Fairly hard compound wearing extremely well, and not too noisy on the road.
Have used a lot of sets of muds and much to my surprise this is the best all-round mud I've had. They got this tyre dead right and will certainly buy them next time. Very good value and performance for the buck. Recommended.
Got recent quote and club price was $270ea fitted for 33s.
