Do you know what he is using it for, what its going in etc?
There are reasons for LSD and depending on its a road truck or not, a well built and looked after Toyota LSD can last fine. The one is the back of my truck has been mistaken for locked under power. And yes I run locker too ARB in front but would not bother with asecond in the rear.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed
Re: hilux lsd unit
Maybe if its been shimmed up it could be good, mine is a little sad. Could be a tutorial in the wings on how to build a mean LSD!!

Re: hilux lsd unit
I've heard so many reports of hilux Lsd's being absolute shit, Rebuild and after 10,000ks they seem like an open.
Re: hilux lsd unit
right my turn, what i currently have is an lsd in the front and it works very very well does not give any trouble controlling the truck. i have had a locked diff in the rear before and it was horrible it kicked me around all over the place. the front lsd has been shimmer with a 2mm washer so has a higher breaking torque. the truck is used for club runs and winch challenge events but my budget is very low which, i would love to put an air locker in the rear but it just isnt an option i can take at the moment. here is a pic of my truck.
yes this is true but if u pull it apart and clean all your components and shim the lsd slightly it will be like a new diff (dont forget the new lsd oil) a little trick i got told for road trucks before you go offroading put your truck on a crossaxle then light the wheels up and this will clean all the crap off the shims and then your lsd unit should work much better.u13turbo

Re: hilux lsd unit
Hi I've got lsd carriers and lsd's for sale to suit, I also mod them to work better by replacing the weak as toyota spring in the centre of the clutch pack with a much stronger one (works much better than shims) but it makes them very tight especially for the first few thousand kms, probably more suited to race road and drift cars rather than off roading. The lsd carriers changed internally over the generations of these diffs (the later ones had even weaker springs lol go figure why toyota did that?) and the bearing sizes changed to so you need to get the right one to suit your head to avoid having to replace the bearings to make it fit.

hi simon what would your price be for a lsd unit for a 1985 ln65 hilux be? my shimmed lsd works just fine and i know people that have had no problems with shimming for offroad use. cheers
