Ahhh the mighty XR.

249cc of 4 valve raw power - Give or take 153kw at the fly, maybe a bit more since the exhaust has been freed up.
But only producing that when on behind the Pajero.

Prolink for superior bump adsorption with modern fully adjustable coilover design including remote reserviour (I think I need a FOX sticker to make them work better)

Disc brakes front and rear for outstanding stopping power (when they are not siezed)

Built in broken clutch and front brake levers

Image

Currently being rebuilt - mechanically it is fine but as shown the frame is a bit rusty - just surface rust from sitting near Tiwai for a bit too long.

Still goes good, well maybe it will again, something not right in the carb as it doesn't like downhills but.... ....It gets put in the shed, left for 3 months, blast compressed air through carb to clean it out so it'll go, kicked about 3 times, given death, parked up for another 3 months.

Ahhhhhhh, the mighty 'ol XR, I had one of them, helluva fun bike too. I bought it in '89, paid about $3500 for it, there abouts, can't remember what year it was tho, about 86 I think, orange tank, blue seat, white guards.
Local guy, Mike Lovell modified it for Theo Huijs, I was told it was bored out to 340 by Mike, but I dunno if it was or not, he would remember it I'm sure. It sure had stacks of low down grunt, and didn't rev like all my mates 250's. Always blew headgaskets, or so we thought, 'till Glenn at a local bike shop (Paragon) found it was pressurizing crank case, and blowing oil up the headstuds, till it hit head, then it would weep out the side, looking like a blown head gasket, or at least that is what they told me, but I know stuff all about XR motors, and how the studs are in them. I was told the head had been machined to take a piano wire as a head gasket....to hold the compression in. Any way, just after we fixed the oil leak problem, some lowlife stole it from outside my girlfriends, and I never got to find out if we had fixed it or not.
I also remember a 280 or 320 kit by WMW in Oz, if my hazey memory is correct, dunno why Mike went for 340, if that is what it really was.

I edited the post, after re-reading it, and it didn't seem quite right with my explanation of time lines.....too eager to reminise I 'spose
No matter the problem, the answer is always give it more gas.......

Being new to bikes and needing to get my licence I have to start at the bottom. So it is a sub 250cc for me.
Went out and bought one of them new Yamaha Scorpio Z's, 225cc, single cylinder, 4 stroke. Nice economical way to get to and from work. Can't believe how cheap these are to run compared with my V8 Disco. Through the savings in petrol costs this will pay for itself in little over a year.
Great fun too. Enough power for a newbie like me to give me the odd scare now and then. I ride it wet or fine. Wet and windy weather makes for interesting times going over the Wainuiomata Hill Road.

It's a new Suzuki DR-Z400SM, SM for Super Motard, a great fun bike for commuting and playn'/hoonin' around on. It'll dick a bigger bike on take off  , but once the bigger one has it's revs up you'll get swallowed up fast. Still, they are a truck load of fun. They look good in black too, also come in white, we tried to get one for a customer, but there are/were none left.....must have been a good seller.
Have fun on it, I am sure you will enjoy that new toy....at least until it get cold!!

Just had me Aprilia Tuono wheels powder coated from red to black. So now my KLX D-Tracker and road bike look similar in style. Only, one goes a shit load faster than the other. :D Since buying the Tuono I've had it chipped and a Akrapovic racing pipe installed. It's insane to ride.

Now - nothing 2 wheels.

Had....

First up was a Yam DT50 as I was only 16 - lol

Then a Yam RS125

Brief fling with a very old BSA restoration before I discovered that 4 wheels was good too..

Much later and in a different country a Kawa 400 trail/road thing (can't remember the model)

Then last in another country again a Honda CBR 600 which was awesome!!

I did get a Hornet but never actually saw it or got back to the country it was in before I sold it again - :(

Cheers Matt

Well. Some of that gear on the wall is my partners gear. But she doesn't get a lot of time to ride with me. I'm always keen to do some quad biking with anyone else that has the time. :D

Well now this brings back memories..(note all Honda's)
Started out with a C50 when I was 15, but dropped a C90 barrel onto it.(perhaps that's where it all started)
Then moved onto a CB125T nice little bike....
Inherited a CB360 from a guy at work... Ran it for a few years.
Bought a new GB400TT off the show room floor.
Then moved onto a VF500F.
Sold up and got married / kids.
Haven't been back on a bike since...
Cheers Calvin
