Hi Guys, I am new to trying to get parts in from the USA and would really appreciate any pointers or help on the best/cheapest options. At the moment I wish to order a new Novak transfer case shift cable from Novak but they are quoting me $74 USD shipping, which is steep. It is not urgent but I also don't want to have it go missing in transit so am aware that sometimes cheapest is not bestest? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Re: Importing parts from USA
Shops and services I have used for importing Jeep parts from US and Australia:
http://www.rokmen.com
http://www.summitracing.com
http://www.quadratec.com
http://www.otrattw.com
http://www.moparonlineparts.com Dealer in US.
http://www.rockauto.com
http://www.wooders.com.au
http://www.blackjackwelding.com.au
Cheapest option typically out of US is to ask the vendor to send it by USPS (US Postal Service). When the package reaches NZ, its delivered by Courier Post (which is now a joint venture between NZ Post and DHL Duetsche Post, I believe). Interestingly, NZ Post has just now started a consolidation service out of US, see http://www.youpost.co.nz I haven't used this service yet, but it does look good as they will be using Singapore Post distribution centres in US.
I have used http://www.buyusa.co.nz consolidation service on a few occasions. And found them to be good and prompt.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, thanks TJ. The vendor is quoting USPS shipping but damn that's expensive! Still it's probably the cheapest reliable way. I have also dropped a line off to Greg just in case he can help. It's not listed on his stock list but worth a try anyhow.
Maybe someone else wants to get one of these shifters as well and we share the shipping costs. Often if buying two or three it may not affect the shipping as there are often minimum charges?? Anyone want one?

Re: Importing parts from USA
You do realise that the shifter is slso available from other Novak resellers like Quadratec: http://www.quadratec.com/products/12521_100.htm
If you have to have that shifter but Novak is expensive on shipping, try other vendors for shipping. Its an odd size item, i doubt you would do better than $75 for shipping by much.

Another thing to consider is GST and customs fee. Single unit plus freight will probably be under the threshold. But 2 units to save freight will put you over the limit. So choice is yours, save on freight and pay GSTor pay higher freight and save on GST.

Re: Importing parts from USA
Guys,
I just brought in a lift for my TJ Wrangler from the sates...
The lift was packed on an export pallet (1200 x 1000mm) with a height of 500mm at it weighed in at 95kgs.
Shipping organized by the vendor state side came in at over $1000.
However, I contacted Advanced Four Wheel Equipment, (http://www.afwe.co.nz/) and got it put in one of there US > NZ containers, and it cost my less that $100 in shipping and administration.
Customs clearance and GST topped $200 tho.
But all said and done, i saved myself about $300 - $400 had i purchased it from an NZ supplier.
Im now looking at Bumpers, Underbody protection Wheels and Tyres... etc
I feel the world is my oyster now that i have cheep shipping as Jeep parts are cheep in the states...
They are more than happy for people to give them a call and discuss bringing stuff in, all they require is an invoice for Customs perposes...
They bring in about 6 - 8 containers a year, so while not a speedy as direct freight, i cannot complain with a 6 - 8 week wait.
Thanks Clive & Vickie at AFWE.

Re: Importing parts from USA
I have a parcel forwarding address in the US and this might be a good idea for clubs or a small group to setup. Shipito is the company and they offer great discounts on DHL and Fedex rates. They will also strip your items out of the bulky retail packaging and then combine all your purchases into one box. You can then elect 3-15 day shipping options depending on how much you want to fork out. It means (as I do) you can shop till you drop from e Bay and all the US sites, take advantage of the free shipping most offer inside the continental US then combine all your items efficiently and hit "ship now" .
"Somebody told me" If you use the three day priority Fedex option and label all your items as faulty for repair with a value of less than $5 you miss all the "bullshit" and are guaranteed your item will arrive as its considered priority by Fedex.

Misdeclaration is not legally correct, technically.
NZ Post has now started a consolidation service out of US as well. I have used www.buyusa.co.nz with good results. Its someone local if things go wrong.

Re: Importing parts from USA
Hi All, to add to this post
I'm in the middle of getting some items out of the USA using YouShop by NZ post which is a mail drop facility in Oregon as mentioned by a ORE member here previously, so far seems a good service. You ship to your own name at a NZpost mail drop facility and they then resend to you and you pay here for NZ post to deliver from USA. will let you know how it goes
This is good as lots of places i have looked to get bits from end up not allowing shipping to NZ which was frustrating.
I noted that there were some YouShop TandCs and one excluded product was gas or air shocks so not sure how they discern normal oil shocks. Packages can be up to 30kg and 1.3meter long if i recall right and rates seem really good.
The freight i had quoted from various parts places for bits seem to be all UPS or Fedex so they can track it etc but this turns out to be dam expensive as it "fast" shipped. I have found recently in some items i shipped for work there was a slow type of freighting from DHL that they dont advertise well being slower freight that is way cheaper but this is not always easily arranged by the parts places remotely from here.
