Checkerheads new project.
Checkerheads new project.
It wasn't my intention but 3 days after selling my truck, I bought another project.
Its a half done project that I have purchased. Greg has done a lot of really good work already, but The truck will be a while away as I plan to change half of Gregs good work.
Going to take the Double cab off and use this
to make a single cab of sorts.
Another couple of pics.
It already has motor, box, tcase and pto wich all sitting in place.
I'm very much in the planning stage at the moment but the initial list is something like this.
Remove double cab and sell.
move motor back 100mm.
Cut surf cab up and fit to chassis. hopefully, 100mm lower.
sort cage etc.
Think about suspension.
Make it run.
Think about winch.
Decided I really wanted a Disco so have gone for the two tier roof line look.
This will be the only visual progress for a while. Next step is get the double cab off and start playing with engine mounts.
Cab off and Transfrecase/winch out
Motor is in it's new home. Hopefully I can make the cab fit around it, other wise I guess I will be moving the motor again.
Cab off the surf
Will need a guard trim.

Re: Checkerheads new project.
So if anybody wants a double cab, let me know.
It will be complete with doors, gaurds, bonnet, radiator support panel, dash etc. No seats. Front doors will be stripped of door cards and window regs.
Also anyone want anything from the rear end of a surf? Complete coil rear end? (chassis cut).

Re: Checkerheads new project.
You raise a good point Madaz. I haven't thought this through.

Re: Checkerheads new project.
Dont forget to leave room for the turbos too....................
Re: Checkerheads new project.
my brothers got a vh41 in his 300zx, hes gnna put a single turbo on it, right just before the intake, with a top mount intercooler just after it, straight to the throttle body etc
Re: Checkerheads new project.
I hopefully will be starting work on it real soon. Just have to sort moving in to the new house. Sort shit in the garage so I can actually work in it, and pull al the stuff out of both cabs so that I can remove one and chop the other up.
Bought some work lights form Bunnings and strung them across the ceiling to add a bit more lighting. Now I need to sort an account with BOC for mig gas, order some steel so I can brace the surf cab and then chop the back off. Keen as to get the surf (or half of it) gone so I have a little more space to work.
Speaking of space, there is none for turbos, well not yet anyway. Hell, once I have moved the motor there's no room for the brake booster either. Anyone know of a tiny diameter brake booster I could bolt up? Then may run a second booster else where to get the braking power up, like Sadam has. Any one know the guts of how that two booster system works?

Re: Checkerheads new project.
Why not cut the double cab up?
You could take a section out then rejoin it?
Like everyone does to the lwb nissan bodys?

I would go this way, would be a lot less work than chopping a surf the doin the body swap. Just cut back wall off an move it forward

Re: Checkerheads new project.
Nibs I agree that would be a sweet looking truck. But I'm building this for winch challenges and I haven't proved real good at keeping panels straight, so less panel equals less panel damage.
Madaz and Fakey, I agree that chopping the double cab would be easier (and likey a tidier job). The reason I'm going to chop the surf is that the double cab is worth something to sell. Surf cab on the other hand, I don't feel bad chopping it up.

Savage Pixie would be proud.
Re: Checkerheads new project.
Couple more pic and a wee bit off progress.
Re: Checkerheads new project.
Looking good aye, looks like Pricey had some good ideas going on in there.
Those manifolds look like they would have taken some time

Re: Checkerheads new project.
Yep, I'm undoing a bunch of his good work.
Re: Checkerheads new project.
I have a steering issue, in so much is there is a motor in the way of my steering column. From memory Prados run a hanger bearing/pillow block type arrangement in their steering shaft? can any one confirm, or even send a photograph? And if I'm wrong about the Prados, what toyota's or nissans use them? Some kind of van must have them?
Also, I need to buy a pipe bender (or hire/borrow one long term). Any one got any recommendations for something that is cheap but functional?
Cheers.

Re: Checkerheads new project.
Bummer you might have to chop the plate up where the column goes through the fire wall and move the hole to the right a bit. did that on my hilux to gain some clearance.
Re: Checkerheads new project.
Madaz wrote:It isnt a 5 minute job getting a landcruiser transfer case under a hilux body without a body lift, I couldnt even guess how many boxes of beer were needed to get the floor back in and the seats back at the right height.
Wouldnt do it again in a hurry
Damn it.

Yep.
That will probably be a big enough hole..........
Taupo 1000s not far away..........
Re: Checkerheads new project.
Any one got a Prado steering shaft to sell me?
Re: Checkerheads new project.
Little bit of rust in the bottom rear corner of my rear door.
So I chopped it out.
So I chopped it out.

Exactly what i was thinking i have trouble keeping panels straight watching with anticipation i will be cutting up my surf shortly much the same i want to keep the wind down back window just to be different. cool build
Re: Checkerheads new project.
Yeah I considered using the tail gate and keeping the wind down rear window, but damn those things are heavy!
I plan on closing in the lower half of the cab and leaving the top open, but making up a panel (with a window) that slots in with just a few bolts.
This way I keep the weight down and get that open air feeling a bit more, but also have a weather proof option as well. Plan on making it quick to remove so that I actually use the feature.
We will see if that actually happens, or just sounds good.

Oh yeah? Do you mean emissions in regard to the open cab?
