Wondering if there is a fabricator/engineer/machinists out there with LH thread taps.
Dont worry I dont want to borrow (break) your taps I know how about it is with these things, but if you have an 18x1.5 LH and 16x1.5 RH and are interested in boring and tapping a few holes (x4) as a cashie please feel free to PM
Location doesnt matter, I just could just send you the stock material or perhaps you could also provide (sell to me).
Cheers
Its a wacky idea I have in mind

Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap
The tricky one will be the M18x1.5 LH. If it's common on steering gear try these guys http://www.briconengineeringgroup.co.nz/ if not you might have to buy one...
You can buy the M16x1.5 for $50 from Trade Tools so someone will have one somewhere.

I assume you are going to adapt those to your terrano? If so I would be interested in some if they work.
Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap
Sort of... I'm working on a bolt on upgrade for the steering system which will eliminate the curved inner tierod.. watch this space
Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap
I'm watching , I have not yet done my 2WD conversion
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Go down and see Brian Howat in Naenae. If you dont want to buy a special and expensive ( ask me how I know ) Im sure he would be the best bet for getting what you want done
There's gotta be some rocks round here SOMEWHERE!

Thanks for letting me ride passenger in your crawler, I had a hard-on all day long. You are a very good driver, I don't think it broke traction once

I like the look of this setup indeed. I have not been able to complete my swap as I cannot locate the correct pitman arm for my truck. I would be very interested in your new TRE's and adjuster.

Hi Pete, what a PITA with the pitman arm you are looking for. So you need the larger spline, smaller taper pitman?
The kit would include 2x adjusters and 2x LH locknuts. The adjusters are made from 25mm 4140 solid bar.
You would need to provide standard Navara 2wd outer tierod ends (used as inners here), and could re-use your standard 4wd outers, in fact you wouldn't even need to remove your outers from the knuckles.
Not sure if you are running front sway bar... I haven't checked clearances w/ sway bar attached.
The TRW brand joint pictured here was $34 from Repco

Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap = HD Nissan IFS Steering Links
If we can get a minimum of 5 preorders, these will be available for $95 per set + $5 shipping. That includes 2x machined adjusters and 2x new LH locknuts. They will fit any Terrano/Navara running the 2wd steering mod.
The machining/manufacturing is done by bombaybasher, a fellow member of the ORE community. Top quality stuff, professional grade workmanship.
Anyone else interested please let us know/give confirmation on this thread.

It would be great if they were powdercoated black, but just not possible at this price. I'll look into powdercoating options.

I'm keen too, but would be interested to first establish if this will fit with sway bar in place? Seem to recall the curved Navara ends were needed to clear things? May be wrong however.

Bu**er I wish I still had my front sway to try it out.
I've found you can get it to handle pretty well by ditching the sway bar and giving it a slight rake in the ride height and only nudge the torsions up a little bit.
IIRC Nathan slide mentioned with the normal 2wd setup he was still getting swaybar contact at full droop?

Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap = HD Nissan IFS Steering Links $9
Just looked under the mistral to realise the swaybar position is a little different.
the sway bar goes no where near the steering.
May pay to go to the wreckers and have a squiz at a mistral. being the same chassi it might be an easy way to fix the clearance issues.
terrano sway bar
http://nissan4u.com/parts/terrano/el_wd21/1991_3/type_3/axle_suspension_and_steering/front_axle_and_front_suspension/illustration_2/
mistral/terrano II swaybar
http://nissan4u.com/parts/terrano2/el_r20/1998_5/type_82/axle_suspension_and_steering/front_axle_and_front_suspension/illustration_3/
The wishbones and chassi are the same but the swaybars are completely different. I think from looking at it the mistral swaybar doesn't have to move as much to effect the same result with the extra link between the swaybar and the wish bone,

Good sh** Crash, that R20 swaybar with a quick disconnect on one side would be a sweet option. Might be worth looking into. What steering box does the Mistral run? ie correct pitman taper for 2wd draglink?

I'll do some more research the WD21 part numbers for the pitman, idler etc are the same as the 4wd Kingcab ute sold in europe(but not the nivara) However the tie rods match the mistral from the king cab....go figure.
talk about nissan's global parts bin
brb.
is the wd21 sway bar 32mm? and is it mounted directly to the chassi or mounted away (below it on mounts)from it by around 60mm?

Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap = HD Nissan IFS Steering Links $9
okay so after comparing three different parts lists and studying mine
yes the mistral has the same steering box and weak idler arm but not the curvey tie rods they are striaght. (wd21 chassis) same.
as for the pitman arm on the mistral.
it is the same part number as the King cab (europe) with the inner tie rods bolting on vertically and out side the steering and idler arms .as apposed to horizontally and inside the steering/idler. which makes the tie rods shorter in length. the tie rods at full lock don't travel in as far(by about 4 inches) when turning which negates the need for the bend in them as it was there to clear the back of the pitman arm when at full lock on the wd21.
so I would need a shorter tie rod anyway Lax.
In discovering this. it also explains why the mistral/ terrano two doesn't bend the tie rods like the wd21 terrano only the idler arm.

Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap = HD Nissan IFS Steering Links $9
Okay I'm trying to visualize what you are saying, I think you are running the standard 4wd steering system that was equipped to all WD21s.
This is the infamous achilles heel system that DOES bend tie rods even though they are shorter. It bends them because of the way the tierods are positioned on the drag link. After increasing ride height they ram up against the draglink and flog it out, suspension movement exacerbates this, causing it to roll on the pitman/idler arms. It was designed like this to control bumpsteer on-road and works very well at straight angles.
But This mod does NOT APPLY to this steering system!

Re: 18x1.5 Left Thread Tap = HD Nissan IFS Steering Links $9
Just a refresher, this mod applies to the '2WD steering mod' that solves the problem of drag link roll.
The 2wd steering mod involves replacing the draglink/tierods with those from a 2wd Navara, except the draglink is mounted on top of the pitman/idler, not underneath.
This is pretty much identical to the Toyo, Mitsu, Isuzu, Suzuki, Chevy, Ford IFS steering setup and allows the inner tie rod to pivot with the wheel as it cycles.
For a few years now Lots of people around the world have been running the '2wd steering mod' with great results compared to the troublesome factory setup. Mine has seen some hard use with the bi-polar front LSD with zero issues.
The purpose of this further mod I came up with is to eliminate the curved inner tie rod end, strengthening the whole link and forcing the outer to be the fuse in the event an extreme hit.
Regarding the idler arm, the best thing I ever did was rip it out and replace it with another steering box. This eliminates it as a maintenance item and eliminates it as a potential weak point.
Crash I challenge you to Combine the 2wd draglink, tierods and idler delete and try to break it with your Cusco front LSD and 32s
This is as strong as you can make it without getting an FJ80 tierod reamer involved

Nice spotting on the swaybar Crash.
I think Lax is right with opinion you have standard 4WD setup.
On the sway bar question... 32mm, whoa, that's big (hollow maybe?). check out http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 25&t=38061
my 95 widebody has thick bars at 26mm, where 24 or 23 appears to be standard for older trucks, possibly a 20mm out there too.
Would really like to see how this Mistral unit might influence clearance.
Will measure and photo mount points when I get a chance. Interesting if you could post similar photos in comparison.
