Rugger Replacement

Postby zukmeista » Tue Aug 19, 2014 10:25 am

So I have an '88 Rugger which is starting to show its age these days, it goes pretty good offroad but is rather agricultural to drive onroad so decided to get something with more power, more comfort and better road manners. Another forum member happened to have something for sale so a deal was done and I'm pretty happy with what I've got. Some pics from previous owner (sorry about size couldn't work out how to enlarge them)

1995 F78 Rugger, 2.8 Intercooled Turbo, done just over 200kms had full gearbox rebuild and timing belt/tensioners replaced 20,000kms ago so should be pretty reliable. All I have done so far is remove the plastic mudguard extensions and bumper ends, removed the s/s bulbar as well. Then fitted some 17" alloys wrapped with 245/70/17 762 Bighorns (measure about 31x9.5") which were bought off TM all up cost me just over $1100 which I though was pretty good as the tyres had only done a few 100 ks when I got them so as new. And have fitted a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust from turbo back to get it breathing a bit better as the stock exhaust was like a straw in comparison, sounds good now but not too noisy which is what I wanted, also gets full boost about 500rpm earlier which makes it a lot better to drive. Future mods will be fitting an EGT gauge so I can tune the fuel pump without melting pistons, 2" lift and some custom crossmembers to improve clearance and a tooobe bar for the front end. Will probably fit a snorkel at some stage too. Will get some pics of it in it's current state next time I engage 4L :D

Sweet

Interestingly this is a later generation of the exact vehicle that Land Rover based their stepped roof Discovery design on, circa 1989.

Theres a Feroza at the Pickapart Wellington if you need any parts

Tracked down some wheel cylinders for it today, partmaster $20 each sounds a lot better than 360 plus gst each from Toyota. :D

Time for an update! :D Haven't done much until recently... A couple of weeks ago I spotted a set of 5 15x8 Globe alloy rims on TM, 5 stud alloys are hard enough to find let alone a full matching set and only cost me $200 to my door. I needed some tyres to fit to them so kept an eye out on TM, spotted a set of as new 32x11.5 AT's for $600 so picked them up on Friday and got them fitted up on Saturday. Swapped them over on the same day. They are quite aggressive for an AT so should be reasonable offroad and they are still very civilised onroad. Yes that is another Rugger lurking in the background...

Spotted a 1990 MWB Rugger on TM last week in Maungaturoto for $500. The ad said it ran great but was dereg. This was my reaction upon seeing it...

Unfortunately I did not have space for it, I had picked up an SJ410 flatdeck off TM a few months ago with a broken rear diff housing and the intention was to fix that and turn it into a bush truck but I kind of lost interest and it was just sitting in the shed so listed that on TM and sold it for $1k, so I dropped that off to Dargaville which freed up the garage for the new truck.

Image

Once that was gone I went and picked up the Rugger. It had been a farm hack for a few years so the interior is rough and filthy and there was a 6" layer of mud underneath it. I spent about $30 at the local washworld to get rid of the bulk of it for now and will give it a proper clean when I get time. From what I can see the body is quite straight and it appears to be rust free underneath although I won't know for sure until I get it properly clean. The motor runs mint and is the 2.8 turbo so shouldn't have too much trouble turning a set of muddies. As previously mentioned it is deregistered but it has a VIN tag on the chassis and I have the old rego labels with number plate details so from the research I have done so far it should be fairly straightforward to get it re-registered. The '95 tows things like a dream and will do 100k's no worries even with a decent load on.

Image

And to finish off the weekend I gave the '95 a good scrub this morning to clean off the cow shit and dust from many km's on rural gravel roads. :D

My old silver Rugger had lifted springs in it so I removed them for the latest acquisition. This is what it looked like lifted:

Replacing lifted with standard:

One end done:

And all four corners un-lifted:

That truck is now going to live on a farm. The body is getting a bit bent and rusty to keep up to WOF standard these days... I have had a lot of good times in that old POS and will be sad to see it go but don't have the space to keep it anymore.

Spent today cleaning up the new one, took ages and still missed a few spots underneath but it's a lot better than it was. There isn't too much rust in it, 1 hole in top of driver's side a pillar and a few other spots of surface rust that will clean up fine with a wire brush. Hopefully it isn't too much drama to get it re registered as I would quite like to have a backup truck in case I have to do repairs on the other one, public transport sucks!
