Is it rear diff lock? The 92 safaris came out with LSD - and the LSD is pretty much the best in the business. Mine will try to bind up even on pavement. But if it has a locker the lsd wouldve come out wouldnt it? Id say go back to factory lsd, only really need a locker on the front which is open diff.

If it has a diff lock switch then that's what it has, no lsd

Buy a Mac valve to replace the solenoids, or if you have on board air use that but very low pressure.

Check all hoses and wires on the actuator (will be on the pumpkin of the rear diff) as these can get knocked off. Best to be stationary in 4wd low before engaging diff lock as well, then dash light will flash a couple of times then glow constantly when the diff has locked in.

Im probably just saying what everyone else is saying, but as said above, if it has a diff lock switch, then itll have an open diff with locker. So if youre spinning a wheel, then its unlocked meaning your problem is somewhere between the switch and the actuator.

Ive heard of a guy with an 80 replace the diff lock and rip out and rebuild the vacuum system before discovering the problem was the switch on the dash had tripped its fuse.

They sometimes have issues with the little plastic gears that link the trip meter to the speedo and to the small elec motor which provides the drive
electronically. It's not common but definitely not unheard of...i'm picking that's why the speedo didn't tick over all the time.
Probably just send it in to Parrotts if you want to keep the mileage legit and they will sort it....for 1 arm and your next child :? .

And x50 for what trucker said, despite someone suggesting that turboing an old td42 grain cutter is 'arguable' - they definitely do mate up very very well with a turbo. .

yes and no... with arse up in the air... neautral spin one wheel and easly hold the other, engine on flick the DL on and no differance, but if 4x4 inguaged there is some friction.
should the DL work in 2x4 or only if in 4x4?

it should lock in, 2x4 , neutral , or 4x4 the diff is only connected by the driveshaft ,
operates independently

well it was working now its failed... it wont switch on, but if I pull one of the outlet hoses off the solenoid it does...
can some one check with theres by pulling the two exit pipes off while engine is running and tell me by putting their finger over the solenoid pipes if one or two are sucking in the OFF position and the ON position, cheers ta

bloody thing.... balls up over xmas ment I never got the mac valve, but just been away on the coast and the diff lock light on the dash keeps randomly coming on, lock is not inguaging, can i asume corectly that it can only be the wiring at the diff or switch thing in the diff that is at fault this time?

Check for vacuum at the diff. There should be two hoses going into the diff. Vacuum on one to disengage the lock, and on the other to engage. If the vacuum doesn't swap hoses with the switch - then work back to a solenoid problem. If no vacuum on either, then either the solenoid or vacuum hoses further upstream. But the diaphragm on the diff is also known to fail, and can be tested by running a hose from a separate vacuum source to the diff and test on both lines - and if you're at the diff, you should hear it engage / disengage, but can also check by spinning the wheels
