ORE Westcoast 2017 Organisation

Postby mike » Wed Sep 28, 2016 7:24 pm

Righto, about time we get some organisation into this.

Three of us from welly have booked from the 13th to the 24th or so, so time is not an issue for us.
Some of you will arrive on the Friday no doubt so Fridays trip is no good for you, Sat then Sunday perfect and most likely home on Monday.

Sat/Sun will be when the harder trips are run naturally. These will most likely be the Chasm and Tailings, or if anyone has other harder trips that are good or better just post them up. Those two are pretty up there for length and fun.

Friday and Monday will see some shinyish trips for those that do the harder trips on the sat/sun and still have time so they can still get to see some scenery. Any recommendations on these appreciated.

Sat and Sunday will naturally have the shiny trips for those that are not going on the harder trips.

So I was thinking it makes sense to head to reefton for Friday/Saturday nights which leaves Friday and Saturday for a shiny and hard trip and move to westport sunday morning for the sunday hard and shiny trips and stay sunday night in westport. Anyone have recommendations for the shiny trip around westport which could even just be up denniston.

So choose your options on the poll. You can choose up to 4 options. Only choose the options if your are actually coming. We need to go off definitive numbers for booking accommodation etc.

Also quote the list below for Accommodation preferences and type of trips you like to do and are setup for.

Righto this is the current Attendees. Just over a month till we depart.

* Mike - Tenting/Back of wagon -- Harder trips. Shiny is good as well.
* Reece - Wagon Harder trips,
* Stinky - Wagon. Harder trips.
*Keith (Smurf) Happy to tent, or crashing with Nuts. Harder/Shiny trip
*Jafa tenting, staying well away from Smurf crashing with his Nuts. fawkin southerners.. Harder the tracks the better
*Stealth - tenting shiny-ish trips (unless can get project truck sorted)

Plan could be to stay at the westport campground just as tent sites, perhaps the first couple of nights (Friday, Saturday) Some of us will be down Thursday night there. Then Move to where we feel we want to go next and what tracks we want to tackle and maybe camp in the bush.

After a Easter, a few of us will be heading southwards and exploring around a bit. Most likely camping up river valleys.

Wait? What? Just noticed this... recently booked the cruiser on the ferry for a couple of weeks on the Mainland either side of Easter - will be coming down geared up for mountainbiking, tramping, camping & hopefully a little 4wd action too.

Was planning to be in the Reefton / Westport area at some point & have no set plans for the Easter weekend so will keep an eye on this thread as we get more organised & let ya know if we are coming. Obviously with 35's, a V8 & a winch I'm set for moderately challenging tracks but I still have to drive it 800km home so 'panel damage & broken CV's guaranteed' type stuff might be off the menu :)

Do it man!, You'll be fine, there's nothing that will break a CV unless you drive like a munter...

Tell me about it   Last time the truck went to Reefton it left with a smashed in side & a grenaded back diff

Thinking we will aim to meet up for some 4wd sometime Thurs-Fri-Sat but it will depend on weather & what else we get up to.

I can take it to wellington for ya

Ok It's getting close.....

So Nuts has kindly agreed to let us camp out in his yard with a nice BIG brazier burning for the campfire nights.
I've organised a portaloo so we don't have to use Nuts's. He is on water restrictions so please don't assume the use of a shower, there are rivers and solar showers as well. I live on a boat so can go months without showers

$costs
1) There will be a small cost to cover the cost of the portaloo. $120 or so all up divvied should be pretty cheap.
2) I'll organise a keg so we have at least some beer and nuts wont need to buy any. Anyone have a keg pump? We should all chip in a little for that as well.
3) Something for nuts as a token for letting us crash in his yard. Like a gift voucher for toyota parts 8)

There looks to be 4-5 trucks coming down from the NI alone. Not sure how many from the south but should be the perfect sized group really.

Some items to bring.
- water containers, nuts is on water restrictions so if we can use our own then we'll be invited back
- camp kitchen stuff for cooking etc, tarps etc, chairs.
- mossie repellent.
- spares for your truck.
- recovery equipement, including tow points.
- Muds preferred, or good recovery points.

There is still time to put more bars on the truck!

Not sure if I will be making it this trip, my 4wd is still on blocks in the driveway, Got a few late nights coming to try get it all together.
I was talking to Nuts earlier this evening and he asked if we had an idea on how many people/trucks are confirmed for Easter?
Can we get a confirmed list going so we can let Nuts know what/who to expect at his place.

We are on the 1pm crossing on the 14th, should be hitting Westport late Friday night. Prob just camp down the beach for the night if its not to windy, and come track you guys down on Saturday at some point.

Anyone got a shiny plan for Saturday/Sunday/Monday??

Our rough plan is to catch up with you guys and maybe go out for a run or two, then mooch south down the coast ending up in Haast.

We cross back on the 24th and drive back up home on the 25th.

Dragged the truck outa the shed at the weekend to get it prepped, only to find Rats had been in it over the last couple of days since I used it and shredded all the wiring in the back, eaten into the emergency food and munched our pillows. All repaired now, but no mechanical work got done

cool, the oz croc explorer is making tracks down to his old stomping ground

Anyway we are all staying at nuts. so everyone who is coming pm me, or email me (with your name - mike@ore.co.nz ) for his address and phone number, or send me a txt or even call if you are old school (mike 021895516). We are setting up base camp there for easter. I've hired a portaloo so nuts doesn't have to queue for his own toilet. There is limited water at his place so please try to be self sufficient. There will be a brazier at nights.

DB, 3-4 of us are crossing back on or around the 25th, so will be around the area as well.

Am I being a Nanna??

The forecast looks pretty grim for traveling south, with the worst of the weather due to hit right when we would be leaving tomorrow after work!!!

It's the wind more than anything, ya reckon the ferry will still be running at 1pm on Friday??

Yup definitely sailing, conditions in cook won't warrant them not to. Thursday afternoon, most likely not.

Southerly 15 knots, easing to variable 10 knots this evening. Southerly 15 knots developing again Thursday morning, rising to 50 knots Thursday evening. Sea becoming high. Poor visibility in rain at times, with heavy falls possible.

Three Day Outlook

Becoming early Friday morning northerly 35 knots with very rough sea, easing Friday afternoon 25 knots, easing late Saturday 15 knots. Moderate southeast swell easing Friday.

Don't budget on doing the chasm in the next few days! The grey was in full steam yesterday. We went through the chasm on Monday and it was low. We had one vehicle drive out of the chasm.
