Sbc heads info needed

Postby mudlva » Fri Jan 06, 2017 9:37 am

Ok me sbc is in need of a xmas pressy. I bought it it had the bottom ends sorted and new cam and rings fitted.
Have googled the heads and they are std smog units at 72cc.
With a bit of a beating its had a couple of bent lifters which moved the rockers and created excess wear on the valve surface.
Long story short im now thinking of dumping the cast iron heads and fitting 64cc alloy heads.

Now this is where it gets differcult....
What to buy????
STA advertise ederbrock std 64cc units for round $1600.
Have seen others around for similar amounts...
Whats been used by others here and more important what should i steer clear from???

If the reasons are persuasive enough i will push to $2k but would rather stay back a bit as i will need new bolts and gaskets and other bits along the way.

Thoughts and experiance please

you'd end up spending double that but the money would be far better thrown at an ls1 with much better technology, performance and drivability than an old gen1. To make your old chevy a good performer you need more than just heads and it'll easily out cost a bolt in gen 3 engine, stick a $100 set of second hand heads on it or move up to an ls

LS1 would be an awesome option but to my reckoning it will blow 10k easy
4k for motor
Plus engine computer tech
Plus fuel lines pumps and fuel cells
Adaptor to fit my t400 trans ( although it may well fit. Not to sure)

Then its all the manufacture work involved as well....

Cheers and i hear what you are saying but chucking on a new set of heads will do for now.

If i every blew the old mill up then yep i would even look at ls2 or 3.

So back to topic, research is leading to edlebrock e street running 210cc intakes 64cc chambers.

Thoughts or susgestions or options

you want to find yourself an online static compression calculator to see how those 64cc heads will be on your engine but being a low compression smog motor you would be well within the pump gas threshold for comp ratio, alloy heads are nice bling but just throwing them on may leave you a bit disappointed with how much bang for buck you'll get for the $2k you'll end up spending once you've allowed for all the additional consumables to fit them, secondhand iron heads are going for 10 bucks a pair on trademe :D

Im dedicated lpg so higher the comp the better.
Had a mate couple of years back throw on a set of alloys and said it really lit the old mill up.
He was also dedicated lpg

i have done what you want to do.took off my 882 cast iron heads (which are in good cond) from my 400 and replaced with edelbrock performer alloys and wouldn,t do it again.as well as the heads i needed different length pushrods, head gaskets etc plus hardened washers for the head bolts .i tried to do it on the cheap and should have put the money towards an LS .the power gains were not what was advertised.it did make more hp and torque but in my mind not enough to warrant the money outlay.can give you a call and chat if you want ie motor specs etc
