Suzuki SusyQ on Big River trail Reefton

Postby tycho » Mon Oct 19, 2015 8:07 pm

Found on Big River trail last week. Looks like a lot of bits have been taken off it. Anyone know if there are plans to get the rest out?

It is a bit of a shame that it gets left there, probably doesn't help the public image of 4WDing.

Having not done big river how hard would it be to drag a trailer in and get rid of the body?

Big River is maybe a grade 2 with a bit of overgrowth in places from time to time. Trailer is probably easy enough.

Getting the body back up the bank would be the challenging bit. It is probably about 10m or so below the track. Likely winch it up, perhaps after cutting it into two.

Only other pic I took. Had American visitors in the back so kind of sucked to see the wreckage amongst the greenery. Would gladly contribute $100 to anyone or group that can recover it out of there and dispose of appropriately.

How far away from the road is it? If it was flipped on its roof could it be towed/winched to the road?

Smurf, we poked around it that afternoon after going through Petrol Hill with you. It is about 10m below the track and has been picked clean. We imagined winching via a pulley block to a tree on the uphill side of the track, but the track is pretty narrow here.

That is an awesome attitude. I realise it wouldn't cover the cost, but it's a great start.

The recovery and disposal seems like a good wee mission for a club at some point. I have no vehicle at the moment but I know how to run a winch and would gladly help out.

If time allows our group may look at pulling it up to the road if possible, Getting a trailer in there would be the challenge I think.

Hope this helps anyone looking for it :)

We stopped and had a look at this wreck on the way into Big river over the long weekend, and made plans to winch it out on our way out and leave it in the bush line to be removed at a later date. Unfortunately we had a vehicle in our group suffer a breakage and with three 4x4s full of young kids we had to leave the wreck as it was. I am still keen to help remove it if anyone else is keen on doing a recovery job. A small car trailer would be sufficient to bring it out. winching it out of the gully it is sitting in would be a relatively straight forward job.

If it's of any help, the co-ordinates are attached here. The file will also open in Google Earth. Pretty dense looking forest! A plain .gpx file is not allowed so it has been zipped.

I've added Big River Mine to our database of tracks on 4wdTracksNZ this morning as it was on the list to get done anyway. It looks like Suzy Q is very near the top of the track.

Original GPS co-ordinates place it quite near the end of the track but it is not at those co-ords. It is a little over half way in

Took some photos last week, the Zook is just over half-way in on the right-hand side.
