Re: Defender 8274 winch mount

Built an 8274 mount once, very simple. I reckon fabricating is a much better option: - you can get the winch where you want it (personally I would mount the 8274 into the grille as otherwise you will lose a lot of approach angle) - you can make decent mounts for the chassis - and decent recovery ...

Sold the 90, bought a Puma

Sold my tricked up 90, sad to see it go but needed a 110 for family duties - and the 4.6 wasn't the most economical for long trips so anyway, ended up buying a *brand new* shiny 110. First new car I have ever bought myself (company cars don't count do they?) was a bit nervous about going to a poxy ...

Re: Hijack during off roading! need help

Wow. I just stumbled on this thread - what a read! Here's my $0.02. I've been through Thompsons, recovered people from there, and broken my truck too. I did get a dozen beers but it cost me a grand or so for the parts I broke Here's my $0.02 1. Underprepared and under-equipped in Thompsons Track ...

Re: 35" tyres

Would king of lift would I need to fit 35" tyres on a 1993 v8 disco. or would I be better going for 33" tyres? Looking and getting some silverstone extreme tyres 35's and a standard rover drivetrain are not a happy match. Either stay with 33's or get ready for some breakage unless you drive like a ...

Re: on the beach

If you drive it on the beach it will rust. But you can slow it down... Wash it every time - especially chassis crevices. Kumeu Washworld is handy - but you'll miss spots. Even weeks later you get underneath and there's sand falling out. So, get some sort of protective oil- like rust inhibiting oil ...

Re: 1994 Discovery - Overheating

If it's heating up when loaded up (up a hill with the a/c on) then the main cooling system isn't coping. Both a slowly dying viscous fan and a old radiator that isn't 100% are common faults with Discos that are getting older. I had a similar experience on my 90, it finally got bad enough that I did ...

Blew up the gearbox... now rebuilt and sounds a whole lot quieter. Rust in both footwells is now gone cut the wheelarches to fit the tires in, and aded a set of cheapo bushmaster flares got a spare the same size high idle turned down goes fine on the beach, runs a bit cool even on a hot day though ...

It's (finally) mobile! Still a few minor things to do - like trim the front guards where they rub on the 285's, and figure out what is draining the battery, but it's all set for xmas fishing expeditions!

The rebuild is getting closer... New door seals are on (which involved the angle grinder) New ...

4.6 block from a HSE rangie - and my old 3.5 carbies and front end. New crank from a 3.9 I think so there was something to turn the dissie. Looks exactly like the old 3.5 - just goes a lot better. Extractors and a carb rejetting and it was good to go. Has oodles of torque.

I have a 4.6 in my 90, I'll be interested to compare... I'm not sure if it's a Blue Flame or a later one, it's a 250ci straight six from a chevy that looks like an HQ Holden, just badged Chevy. Has a single Weber on it. Given that my missus has a V8 Disco, this will be the only non-V8 in our ...

I used the Ashcroft 4.11's from the UK. They are great and it compensates almost perfectly for the bigger tyres. KAM in the UK also do a range of ratios but none of them are cheap. I have 33's and 35's. I use the 35's on tracks which have been reshaped with 35" holes and ruts and 33's would just get stuck. The 33's I use everywhere else. If you take a dozen trucks on 35's through a muddy track even if you are all driving responsibly it ends up with ruts that will belly a truck ...
