Re: fully submerged
Surely on the flotation side of things it will sink properley if I open the doors and let the water in?
And do the gear boxes and diffs really need to be pressurissed - I know getting water in there is bad but its not going to kill it in a day is it? Or will fill the case and hydraulic lock it

Re: pulling rear axles - sj413
I've given up - I reckon I'll break something if I try any harder so I've just put it back together and I'll live with my open diff.

Re: pulling rear axles - sj413
I honestly don't think the chain and sledgie will give it any better then what the slide hammer was doing but I'll give it a go. I like the idea of winching it or pulling it out with another vehicle. I could use another vehicle or get an army unimog to winch it or an army tirfor winch. The biggie ...

Re: pulling rear axles - sj413
So if its twisted or wedged the axle will be dammaged even if I get it out with a HUGE slider hammer. Might just cut my losses and put it in the front. Pity though I was hoping to play silly buggers on the roundabouts in the rain as well as the obvious improvement offroad...

pulling rear axles - sj413
Just got my lockright auto locker and I'm trying to put it in. Have to pull the rear axles out to get the diff out. The left one came out easy. The right one is in there unbelievably tight. I rented a slide hammer from hire pool the biggest they had and whacked away for a couple of hours and no joy ...

I want to make a random project of a paddock bash car and see if I can get it to drive in water over its roof (I plan on wearing my dive gear). Anyone got any ideas on what I should do to it to achieve this. My budget is $100 and that will include buying the car. Of course I will need a big snorkle ...

Re: sj413 - no 4wd
Pulled the whole front end to bits and couldn't find anything wrong, so I put it all back together and its working again. So no idea what I did but glad to have it working. Everything needed a good grease up anyway so probably wasn't a bad thing after all.

Re: sj413 - no 4wd
Yeah like you were talking about you can turn the front driveshaft while the wheels are on the ground. The front hub locks are functioning properly. when you lift the front wheels you can turn either one freely without it trying to drive the other one backward.

sj413 - no 4wd
After a few months of road use I went out for a play in the mud today only to find that I was only driving the back wheels. The transfer case is still driving the front driveshaft so I'm pretty sure everything in the driveline is good up to the front diff. I pulled the freewheeling hubs apart and I ...

Re: removing sj413 doors
Sounds like heat is what I need. They are seriously tight too. Looking at the bit on the impact driver I can see that that it has twisted (powerbuilt impact bit). I don't like the idea of drilling them because I'm not convinced that I will get enough torque with vice grips before they slip. I haven ...

removing sj413 doors
I'm trying to take my doors off to fix some rust around the hinge area before it gets too bad. They bolt on with philips head screws. Really tight - I've tried getting an impact driver on them and giving it a good whacking but can't get them to budge. Havn't got any air tools would that be likely to ...

sj413 idle problems
I think I found the air leak today. On the joint between the carb and the intake manifold. I sprayed crc on the joint with the engine running and the revs increased. Problem is I just replaced the gasket the other day while trying to eliminate the problem and so it shouldn't be leaking. I thought I ...

sj413 idle problems
My SJ413 started surging while idling a few weeks ago. It is major surging but and you need to wind the idle up quite high to prevent stalling. Once you break through about 2000rpm it runs faultlessly and you wouldn't know there was a problem til you back at idle. My first thoughts were that it was ...

Do SJ413's have a non interferance motor or am I real lucky
Was changing my cambelt today and put the new one on. Gave the motor a couple of turns by hand and then started it up. I hadn't put the crankshaft pully on and after a few seconds of running I heard a ping and the cambelt shot out of the engine bay. I thought the motor would have destroyed itself ...

You mean the head gasket blew? I just replaced one on mine recently. Compared to just about any other engine it is a very simple task and only took me about 3 hours working quite fast. It does involve taking off the head and everything attached to it so if you havn't done that sort of thing before ...

adjusting sj413 carb
My choke on my carb wasn't having any effect which was ok till it got a bit colder recently. Rather than try to fix the problem I just replaced the carb with a spare one I had with a working choke. As soon as I started up I found that the engine idles at about 2500rpm even with the throttle linkage ...

sj413 headgasket
My sj413 has been using a bit of water lately and today it started spitting out lots of white steamy smoke and water dripping out the exhaust so I'm guessing its the head gasket. Is that a common fault on these vehicles and is it likely to be anything more sinister like a warped or cracked head or ...

Got it sorted now. That rubber bush you mentioned was all full of crap so I cleaned it put it back together and it was better than ever. SJ413 transfer case
I just brought a SJ413. Today I took it to the beach to test it out nothing serious at all. Anyway I was shifting from 4L to 4H at about 5kmh and it made a bit of a grinding sound (not any worse then if you'd missed a shift) and got stuck in neutral. I tried rolling it foward, backward, being ...

Opinions on SJ413 and similar
I've seen a few of these selling at reasonable prices with quite low kms so I'm seriously looking at getting one. The are undoubtedly good off road but it would be my only car so It would have to handle the road side of things ok too. Are there any major reliability problems to keep an eye out for ...

removing 4jb1 crank pully
I'm replaceing the water pump on my '90 bighorn. 2.8TD 4jb1 engine. It seems that I need to remove the timing cover to get at it (I guess I might as well replace the timing belt while I'm at it) and to do this I need to remove the crank pully. I had a bit of a half hearted attempt to remove the nut ...
