If tyres are ok, check the steering damper. Wider tyres put more stress on it and they tend to die, allowing shudders and shakes thru the wheel.
A decent foam cell one does the trick nicely.

I would rather keep it diesel, done diesel to petrol conversions in 2 previous surfs and never had anything but trouble.

Well, took the truck to Blenheim, and found I had a blocked breather pipe to the catch can. Cleaned it out, and no more smoke!. However, i've noticed it's blowing bubbles in the rad, altho not using water, so think the head or gasket is gone anyway.

I have it being checked on Tuesday, and will make sure that is the problem first, but with a 2L-T it's most likely the head (altho I fixed the smoking problem, turned out to be a blocked breather pipe).
