Located in ChCh. Its interesting that you say to adjust the caster more since I have looked thru all 3 of my Surf manuals and two of them indicate 2 degrees 30' instead of the 1 degree 40'. This would indicate that higher would be better and this matches what you say. One book, depending on model ...

The settings are as follows after a couple of comments - I had two alignments done. The second was almost the same as the first with very minor differences (I can't find that one at the moment). Note that after either of them there was no change to the wandering on the road but there was a minor ...

Bloody manuals. I have just realised that what I thought was either a manfs name or style (Manuak) is a typo and should be Manual. This error has been repeated several times in this section. And explains why I don't have one that looks like that. Moving on - I did have a fiddle with the Power ...

Well things are never simple. My steering box is an auto with power steering and the adjustment for taking out the steering slack doesn't exist. The box does have an adjustment on the top but it is to do with an internal adjustment of some sort and does not take out steering wheel slack so back to ...

Right I'll adjust the valve a bit more. I found (after reading an Aussie 4WD mag) that a lanolin based spray lubricant is much better than a silicone based one. So a healthy squirt and a wiggle should solve a possible seizing issue. I have no idea if it has been raised. A little hard to tell with ...

Sorry should have stated petrol V6. This happened a few years ago which may correspond to that mentioned above re a recall. However I bet the recall was only Toyota ? What about all the 3rd party stuff out there. And since my vehicle is a 1990 how come it took Toyota at least 10-15 years to sort the ...

You could be right but going down Otira with a full load and no brakes near the bottom soon makes you put something a little more grunty on (and I guess I could have put it into Low). I still have more travel in the rear balancer to try but Safer Brakes reckons that the balancer wasn't much chop ...

3Ltr Surfs and cracking heads

Since I have one and it blew a head gasket (fortunately didn't crack the head) at the left rear I thought I might mention that the mechanic and I found there has been a design flaw with either the head or gasket or both. My recollection is hazy now since it happened a long time (at 100k) go but ...

Brake balance between front and rear brakes on a 1990 Surf

I have found that when I fit heavy duty pads to the front and brake hard that the rears squeal or even lockup. My take on this is that because the fronts are taking a heavier shove to make them work the rear shoes are being over applied and locking up. I have adjusted the rear balance lever (and ...

The steering damper is probably due for replacement anyway so sometime soon. I will keep an eye out on Trademe for a cheap electric fence since that might help also. And I did note from my manual that there is some adjustment on the steering box but past experience has shown me that it is never as ...

Problem with wandering steering on a 1990 Surf

Cannot work out how I never knew this forum existed. Anyway my Surf has taken to being a bit vague in the steering lately. I have had Toyota's free steering thing done plus they replaced a couple of other components in the steering. They did a wheel alignment and I have had another one since (by a ...
