Re: Looking at getting 1989 Safari SWB 4.2turbo

I do remember thinking that the clutch engaged very low to the floor, to me this would normally indicate a worn clutch plate. Is it normal for a safari clutch to engage/bite quite low to the floor in 1st? That's normal. You can pick up a clutch from partmaster for under $600. Topok my bro-in -law ...

Re: More Terrano advice from a newbie, Please :)

The 96 to current terranos/pathfinders do not have full ladder chassis. Which means you will have alot of trouble fitting tow hooks, bullbars etc. You should be sticking to 95 and pre this year. I would suggest 92-95 as they had the rust issues sorted by then and they got better interiors, ie better ...

Re: New Toy..Finally :)

Safaris are too heavy for MTR's. They go better on lighter trucks. BFG, and kumho's work well on them. Go a 3" lift with gearbox spacers, radius arm spacers to move the front diff forward and castor correction bushes then you will fit 35" tyres on no problems. You will soon get sick of 33" tyres. A ...

my experience with cheap aftermarket CV joints is buy heaps as you will break them heaps. Either buy new original or go to a wrecker and get original secondhand. How good do you want to get changing cv's ??????

Re: Looking at getting 1989 Safari SWB 4.2turbo

They take a little getting used to but I prefer to drive my safari then the missus mistral. It may have had the swaybars removed. If so the body roll takes a little getting used to with the understeer. Has it got castor correction bushes in the radius arms, and are all the steerinf linkages in good ...

I posted details on the forum late last year where to pick up aftermarket solenoids for $180 from an industrial supplier. 24 volt to. Do a seach, it will be under Albundy's posts. You won't get an original, I tried and went the aftermarket way.

Re: Better breathing for a GQ

I run a normal filter down at the motor but run a oil soaked pre-filter up at the snorkel top hat. I also took out the resonator box near the side wall to produce better flow, just used some flex tube from supercheap. I am also looking at replacing the exhaust with 3" but bring the end out behind ...

Re: Newbie thinking Terrano auto is for me?

check for rust especially where the floor pans join under the passenger seats. Keep an eye on the steering gear as this can waer out real fast if the torsion bars have been wound. Talk with Kiwipete as he owns a diesel terrano, he may be able to add more. I owned a 94 v6 and loved it heaps, rollled ...

I looked into advanced courses as I did this one on the coast years ago. To do recovery courses you have to go through "tow truck school". And the cost was thousnads of dollars. You have to do the full recovery course to recover vehicles for a fee.

I have an aussie Lokka in the front and a re-built factory in the rear. When I say re-built, I mean "re-built"(took it to a professional racecar gear maker) including aftermarket soleniods. Engages and disengages instantly now.

Jamie down at Automotive parts in Rangiora has a whole rear axle with locker, vacuum line, solenoids etc. I know he still has it as he won't split itm into seperate parts. I put a lokka (aussie) in mine and haven';t looked back. Haven't broken any CV's yet either. Lokka cost $699 off the shelf.

The conway is quite easy at present. Only one soft spot and no water over wheel depth, mostly hub depth. It needs a good flood to make it more interesting. I would encourge you to give it a go. Head in from the inland rd down to the coast, or pop out at sh1.

heading down the Conway saturday spending the night there and heading out to the beach on sunday. You would need a snorkel though, tow hooks and ropes. Should be fun as I haven't been down it since the last lot of heavy rain and I expect the course has changed and the bottom to be very soft.

Conway river is a good trip. You will need snorkels and recovery gear. After that last lot of rain the river bed will have changed and be soft. Just what you need for a good old river trip.

I run OME, and although I am not too happy with the extra height or lack thereof, I am happy with their ability to articulate, cushion a hard ride etc. I have gone down the replacement thought, and after reading this, I think I will go with some coil spacers to get a bit more lift for larger tyres.
