Its a fantastic area. Good for an overnighter. Some nice trout in the Whanganui and the Waione is a great valley. The bird life quietened down with a 1080 drop a few years ago but the bell birds are singing again.

OK. Good idea. Been a while since I was in there.
When it reopens, park up where the track forks a few km further on. You usually turn left down the hill, but a brisk walk up to the right provides some spectacular views of Ruapehu.

Instead of going over the second bridge (from Owhango) turn up the hill (at the blackberry patch). Not such a walk in the park. take a winch and shovel.

Theres a hut half way and great views.
