Re: Some Safari questions...

When i put a multimeter positive pickup on the positive terminal of the '2nd battery', and place the negative pick up on the negative post i get 24v, but, if the negative pick up is conected to the inlet manifold i get 12v. This is because the the negative post of your "2nd battery" is connected to ...

Re: Some Safari questions...

It was so much easier with 12v... Oh so true!! DaveM given you a great start, and as he said its easy! With your experience on previous cars, it will be a breeze for you. So get yourself a 24V to 12V reducer, links below from TM to give you a start. Next you need to work out what Amp reducer you ...

Re: Some Safari questions...

Just check the radio isn't just direct wired to one of you 12V batteries, lots of muppets do this rather than finding a 12V feed off the inverter Good advice!! As said best to get an 24V to 12V reducer and run all you 12V off that .... You can get 5 to 25 amp ones and above for not a lot of cost ...

Re: Stand alone 12V system for a 24V TD42

Talk to Monstr, his has two alts. Done well, and since it is on a winch truck, it is in the worst conditions possible. Until you are not relying on one 24 volt alternator, the system is not "stand-alone". Put the 12 volt one low, if it stuffs out while out there, use the system you have now as back ...

Re: Stand alone 12V system for a 24V TD42

If that was me, I would make a true stand-alone system. No black boxes, compensator's, or stuff like that. You will need separate 12 volt alt. Build a complete 12 volt set up with it's own charging system, with the only thing they have in common is the key switch. i would use a 24 volt relay to ...

Yea I know, but the price of some 24v accessories out weighs the cost of the 12 v setup, also quite hard to find some accessories that will come 24v, try finding a 24v HF radio! Plus another battery, space the list goes on ....

As a suggestion, My Terrano comes with a factory 70amp @12 volt alt. With the standard N70 battery in the engine bay, after 3 lengths of rope it was flat, so to over come this, I installed a N120 battery in the back over the rear axle and ran 70mm cable for both positive and negative to the front ...

Re: Stand alone 12V system for a 24V TD42

I run a redarc charge equaliser to balance my batteries and run the biggest batteries I can fit. Don't remember the cca ratings for em. Works fine. They do an equaliser for using a 3rd battery for your application and its a real basic fit. I just draw off one battery and let the equaliser ...

Re: minor electrical issue

The 12V in a 24V safari is crap! Will only push out around 5 amps at its best!! Most radios need around 8 amps at full volume and your 12V is being shared with some other 12V electrics in the truck. Best to do: 1: If its just the radio you want to power, and not a lot else get your self a 24V to 12V ...

I have run Bighorns 33" 12.5 for 25'000 KM so far and they are great! I had the same decision as you, Just for the small extra cash I went for Bighorns and glad I did! As my daily drive she's low on noise on road and I'm out hitting the mud / gravel around 28 times a year. One track I do 1 to 2 ...

Re: 230-240v alternator : where to get one??

If it is 12hp as he said then you should be all good. I recommend you get a 240V alternator and put a small pulley on, then hook up to main drive. Most 240V alternators need between 2000 and 3000 RPM (at alternator) pending the quality to get full power, thus your diesel should idle around half (ish ...

Re: 230-240v alternator : where to get one??

Oh OK so your using yours as a "Cleaning machine" for clean power out. A good idea if you have continues power I.E from a gen but if your going from battery the conversion from 12V / 24V to 240V will heat up circuitry quite a lot thus may have the "burn out" problem. Your set up sounds good, what ...

Re: 230-240v alternator : where to get one??

UPS is only designed to give power for a limited time, thus with continue use it will just burn out ... all a UPS is an inverter with a few large capacitors and relay to switch over from 240V source to 12V source when your 240V is gone ... and yep your right too, a 13 to 21 amp is big bucks! You can ...

My advice is that make and model always have there plus and negative points. Just make it a diesel with solid axle back and front, from there you can't go wrong, any mods you want to add you can. Always best to go with a model which a lot of people have (landcruiser, Patrol, Hilux ect) as these are ...

Re: 230-240v alternator : where to get one??

Your right they do, its the diodes that turn AC to DC in an alternator for a car :D

Also agree with the "sensitive gear" comment, can be real hard to smooth your AC power gen so when RPM goes up and down you don't get spikes / low power .... really depends on what your using it for.
