FJ40 alternator upgrade
I'm looking to upgrade the 45A alternator in my FJ40 to something around 100A. After a bit of research it sounds like I want a Denso-style replacement with an internal regulator, some 2 gauge wire and a voltmeter. I'll run the 2 gauge to the battery, the other wire to the ignition via the voltmeter ...

Re: Interested in a GPS tracking system for your 4X4?
I have one. I bought something similar to what you find here (and I did indeed purchase it from Ali Express): m Prices vary but they're all about $55USD. It was pretty easy to install. I feel a hell of a lot better about leaving my ride at home or around the place with that in it. The one I got didn ...

Re: Switching out the fuel pump on an FJ40
Found an electric carburetor pump and installed it. Seems to be working and the old pump seemed not to be - wet one side, dry the other. Now fuel is getting to the carb but it's not spraying. I've just replaced the old vacuum tubes but no joy. I've been reading around and it seems like a rebuild or ...

Switching out the fuel pump on an FJ40
It looks a lot like my old fuel pump has died. Gas is not coming out at the carb but there's plenty at the inline filter just before the pump (replaced the fuilter for the hell of it). What's involved in switching to an electric fuel pump? They seem a lot cheaper. What kind of flow volume do I want ...

Re: FJ40 V8 Transplant
It's a small world. I showed that donor Landcruiser to my mechanic and he recognised it. It used to live down the road from where I live now. Current owner bought it sight unseen from TradeMe after it'd been sitting rusting for six months. Got it shipped down to Wellington and found it was riddled ...

Re: FJ40 V8 Transplant
Funds aren't much of an issue, it's more timing. I can't jump on anything right now, just planning it all out. I'll get in touch with that guy though, cheers. I love the ih8mud forum but they dominate FJ40 search results. It's tough finding local info. I'm just more looking for local classified ...

Re: FJ40 V8 Transplant
Well if that's not a concern, sweet.
So apart from TradeMe, where's a good place to look for a donor vehicle?
Off to see my mechanic today to talk about all the stuff I want to do. Good thing his hair is already grey.

Re: FJ40 V8 Transplant
What do you think of a Diesel 6.5L as opposed to a 350? I think it's a V8, wouldn't bother otherwise:

Engine needs reconditioning.
My FJ40 *used* to be diesel. Hasn't got much of that left to show for it though.

Re: FJ40 V8 Transplant
Good plan. I'll try to find one in Auckland.
What are common things to look for in a chevy 350 to tell you if it's in good condition or if there's something obviously wrong with it?

Re: FJ40 V8 Transplant
Sounds like the advice I've had elsewhere, so good advice! Where would you get a 350 chev from? Trademe? How much would you expect to pay for the engine, transmission, installation? Is it possible to retain selectable 2WD/4WD/low-range with it? Seems like a serious waste to keep the old four-speed ...

FJ40 V8 Transplant
Hi there. I've never transplanted an engine before but I'm looking to buy a V8 to put in my FJ40. This is totally new ground to me, so any advice or suggestions are welcome. Right now I'm at the stage where I'm trying to figure out what engine to look at. I've had suggestions of 1UZ, Holden and ...
FJ40 help
Gidday. I've got a '79 FJ40 that I'm working on fixing up. Was bought in running condition but a few things have died along the way. Right now, stuck on some electrics. I'm looking for someone who knows LandCruisers to come around, drink a few beers and eyeball it a bit, let me know what they think ...

New guy here. I'm fixing up a '79 FJ40 short wheelbase. Steep learning curve, but enjoying it. Here to see if I can pick up any advice or hints.
