Re: Hilux Surf 1KZ-TE Engine Running Temp?
I have spent a fair bit of time with the cooling system on my ‘KZ & read A LOT about them on the websites. A few thoughts: The standard thermostat opens at 82°C and should be fully open at 95°C. As the engine comes under greater load (hills, towing etc.) the cooling system has to dissipate more heat ...

Redline VS VMX90
Has anyone changed over from VMX90 to one of the Redline manual gearbox oils? I’m interested to know if they found any improvement in the synchromesh.

Re: Beware the Auberins Temperature Probe
You need to look at the tip with a magnifying glass to see it there’s a flaw.
The replacement probe Auberins sent me has a different cable type and the probe sensor is clearly made in one piece, unlike the original one and the one posted by petefj40 which has a fused on end cap.

Probe was a PT100A-NPT. You can just make out the flaw around the cap.

Beware the Auberins Temperature Probe
I while back I fitted an Aurberins water temperature gauge. Recently it started reading erratically. I had fitted it along with another gauge in a DIN panel above car stereo. So I pull it out to find out what’s the matter with it and I find the gauge and my new head unit soaked in anti-freeze. Crap I ...

Re: OIL CATCH CAN for 80 VX 1HDT
How does the crankcase ventilation work in these motors? – in a petrol engine there is normally a pipe from the air cleaner to the crankcase, and another from the pcv valve to the intake manifold. Therefore there is a path for air to flow. With these diesel engines there seems to be only a pipe from ...

Re: Cargo barrier for a kZN185
I think part of the reason that they don't make them for this truck is there is not muck to mount the top to - there is only the grab handle which is 0.5m away.

Seems Milford don't make one for this truck. Anyone know if one from a different vehicle will fit or any other solution. Cheers

Re: Thinking of towing with a 1KZTE?....Think again…
Thanks for your replies. To go over some of the points raised in the forum: EGR soot in the intake: The 2 intake pipes where cleaned out 3 years ago when the head was replaced. It will be interesting to see how much is in there now. I have disabled the EGR and the intake auxiliary butterfly is been ...

Re: Thinking of towing with a 1KZTE?....Think again…
EGT gauge is an Auberins digital. I guess taking it easy up hill is one thing but being the slowest vehicle on the road is taking some getting used to. BTW it has already cracked a head with the previous owner (receipts for $4000 worth of repair) hence going over the whole cooling system. Must admit ...

Thinking of towing with a 1KZTE?....Think again…
I’ve recently started towing a 1.5 ton caravan with a 1KZTE manual, non-intercooled Surf. This truck has had the entire cooling system maintained (new radiator, viscous clutch etc.). Now most would think that this truck tows the caravan easily due to the amount of power these things have, plus the f ...

EGR deleted, now to disable the intake Butterfly’s
After my previous post, I’m disabling the 1KZTE EGR system. Disabling the exhaust valve is easy enough but previous posts say the intake constrictors (butterfly’s) also need to be disabled. Failure to do this they say can cause smoke and increased mpg. I can only guess that this is caused by the inc ...

EGR Delete and Engine Tempertaure Rise

Gearbox oil for cold shifting
I have a Surf with, I believe, the R151 gearbox. It’s getting a bit long in the tooth and while cold is hard to get into 1st on the move, and a bit rough from 1st to 2nd. It’s fine when warm. Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of the likes of Redline, Fuchs, Castrol Multitrax or sim ...

1KZTE – What’s this whistling Sound?
The engine has taken to making a whistling sound (makes a sounds like old televisions did when turned off the broadcast…) – it happens only under light throttle between 1100 and about 1800rpm. Increasing or decreasing the throttle the noise instantly stops. The sound doesn’t change pitch when incre ...

KZN185 Front Hub Removal
My ’97 surf seems to have a different bearing setup to the one shown in my HiLux manual – A single sealed bearing as opposed to the normal 2 tapered bearings. There seems little information on the net as to how service these things. Am right in thinking: To remove the CV’s and driveshaft’s, remove th ...

Which 4wd and club choice in Chch?
Hi, I’ve been reading this forum for a while now but I’m still just as confused as ever…. I’m looking for a 4wd for a family of four. It needs to be able to tow a 1500kg ‘van, it also needs to be used as a second car during the week and be suitable for offroad newbies I have so far narrowed it down t ...
