looking to buy Holden Monterey

I'd like to find a moderately low-mileage Holden Monterey (post 2000, prefer petrol) to replace my aging Isuzu Bighorn. Any suggestions?

Specs for Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.7L

I've seen in my neighbourhood a Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.7L (2002), and it looks like the sort of vehicle I want to buy. This is for a variety of reasons (e.g. 4-door, likely off-road ability, not too big, 3.7L petrol oomph for highway overtaking, spare wheel on back so I can put my bike carrier ther...

Is Cape Palliser to White Rock possible?

Hi, I know it's short notice but I have visitors and was planning on going to Cape Palliser tomorrow (Satruday 31 Dec 2016) and just realised a 4WD (Isuzu Bighorn) trek up to White Rock might be a nice off-road drive for them? Is this currently possible? Easy? Are gates locked? Thanks for any advice...

WTB: Isuzu Bighorn or Holden Monterey later than 2000

I'm looking to replace my 1993 v6 3.2L Bighorn with the newest model I can find, probably 2004 3.5L petrol, but a bit earlier, eg as old as 2000, would do. Holden Monterey, or Vauxhall ???(I've forgotten), also OK of course

Solution to longstanding intermittent wiper problem

Several of us with 1992+ Bighorns have in the past struggled with the intermittent switch on the windscreen (windshield) wipers only working sometimes, even after replacing the rotary switch. I discovered by accident that I can get mine to work by turning the headlights on and off one or more (maybe...

Re: Flashing “Auto Trans” light and ECM (Engine Control Modu

Thank you for your interest. I believe the problem is now solved. (1) I finally managed, by shorting pins 1 & 3 of the green 3-pin socket, to get the code out of the transmission control computer as 49. (2) After extensive google searching, I found the transmission diagnostic codes at two place...

Flashing “Auto Trans” light and ECM (Engine Control Module)

On my 1993 Bighorn ( 3.2L petrol [added] ), I have for some time had an intermittent flashing of my “Auto Trans” light, and it jumping into, or staying in, limp-mode 3rd gear. It stays off or “a while” after I turn off the ignition and restart, but then it comes back unpredictably. For example, two ...

Wanted: Holden Monterey/Isuzu Bighorn petrol 2002 or later

I'm looking for one of the later Holden Montereys or Isuzu Bighorns, petrol 3.5L, 2002 or later, in good condition.
I'm in Lower Hutt, but will travel or get contacts to look one over.
Anything out there? Thanks.

Re: What's a good replacement for 1993 LWB Bighorn?

Thanks for these replies. I think instead of going backwards I will go forwards very slowly and look for one of the last (2002 or thereabouts) 3.5L petrol (for highway overtaking) Holden Montereys (ie Australian Isuzu Bighorn). It should be affordable, last me another 10 years, and it is a format of...

Re: Traction control vis-a-vis Limited Slip Diff

May I thank you all for this discussion. I now understand better what traction control is all about. I expect it was developed for continental (eg USA, Europe, Japan) winter highway situations, of which I have had several years experience. But I think I will stick to limited slip diff for the sort o...

Traction control vis-a-vis Limited Slip Diff

A novice question from an old fella trying to keep up: I understand the concept of a limited slip diff, and I know there are about three varieties of them. I have one, thankfully, on my 1993 Isuzu. But what I don't know is whether they are still used, or the concept is even needed with newer vehicle...

What's a good replacement for 1993 LWB Bighorn?

I fear I may need to replace my 1993 LWB 3.2L petrol Bighorn (with LSD) sooner rather than later, as repairs are arising more often (starter motor, auto-trans light flashing, wheel bearings getting noisy, etc) and are becoming less cost effective. I bought it when it was 6 years old (as a used Japan...

Re: removeable tow hitch/bar

I got my removable tongue bar from Fully Equipped (Hamilton, Lower Hutt, + ???) last September at a VERY reasonable price because, as they explained to me, there is no longer any real market for bars that fit older models, in my case 1993 Bighorn. They have many variants for many vehicles (all were ...

1993 Bighorn: console lamp for A/T shift position

1993 Bighorn: I have failed to discover how to get at the A/T shift lever illumination lamp on the console. I have removed the front console and got the black square plastic box thing to slide up and down the shift lever. But I can't see how to get at the bulb inside the box thing. All I did was bre...

Re: 92 Bighorn 3.2 petrol buying advices??

I've had my 1993 since 1999 and I'm still very happy with it. (Only quibble is that turning circle isn't great). Yes, it is a bit thirsty on modern standards and that 550km (highway) is about right. Mine is automatic and it works well off-road. My strong advice would be to get one with limited slip ...

Re: 3.2 v6 good or nah?

I've had mine, 1993 model, since 1999 and it's still great. Yes, fuel consumption is high by modern standards - 400km per tankful (75 litres?) around town and 500km on the highway. Mine has done very well off-road - both club and private trips (and on the former I can see how well it does compared w...

Maxtrax, waffle boards (sand ladders) etc

Maxtrax seem awfully popular in Oz, and waffle boards (sand ladders) seem very popular with Brits going to Africa. But of these self-recovery devices, which ones have people found more useful in NZ conditions? - e.g. mud more often than snow (I guess we all know we'll come across sand if we go to th...

I came across Bush Winch while browsing for other stuff, see

Does anybody know anything about it? Is it too good to be true? Or too expensive for what it is? The reviews and videos posted on their own site look pretty impressive.

Re: Garston-Bannockburn OR Piano Flat-Roxburgh

Hey, thanks guys, very helpful. As albundy suggests that Garston-Bannocjburn is an easy drive in 2wd, can I take it that the ford that downunderxj mentions is typically no more than axle deep? I certainly don't have a snorkel - but I know to keep an eye on the weather and the up-country rainfall, an...

Re: ARB deflator guage.

Two quotes have been posted: 15-20psi between cold and hot (15+min drive) would not be unusual. The rule of thumb is for every 10° Fahrenheit change in air temperature, your tire's inflation pressure will change by about 1 psi Here is why the second quote is reasonable. Remember Boyle's Gas Law from...

Re: ARB deflator guage.

I just bought an ARB tyre deflator. I find it leaks air (so probably gives inaccurate pressure readings) between the tyre's valve stem and the brass adaptor that screws onto the valve stem. Should there be an O-ring in that adaptor to stop that leaking from happening? I can't see otherwise how the v...
