Re: Diesel Boys old terrano lock up solenoid mod
Interesting thought with the speed sensing switch but awfuly difficult to achieve in my instance. I do question having a switch to open the circuit and supply 12V to the solenoid, would this cause the computer to report a fault and not lock the torque converter when switched back in the normal ...

Re: Diesel Boys old terrano lock up solenoid mod
I have a 3 position switch. Down position is normal i.e. just connects the wires as if no changes. Middle position just severs the wires so as it has no ability to lock - i.e. I can leave it in fourth without locking the TC Up position is TC locked. So if I want it to have normal behaviour (and ...

Re: Diesel Boys old terrano lock up solenoid mod
I'm pretty sure 5.5 volts is always there and is around 13-14 volts when locked. When i unlock the torque converter and without kicking down, if i back off the throttle and then try to lock again, it will not lock. I was thinking maybe it has something to do with the 5.5 volts always being there ...

Re: Auto Trans Replacement Tips
- What oil goes in the transfer case? I'm guessing its not Dextron 3 which goes in the Trans itself. Will stick with what I know here and leave the rest for those that do know. Dexron 3 is fine for the transfer case. There are a couple of options specified, but if you use one of the thicker grades ...

Re: Auto Trans Replacement Tips
Also, the Trans didn't come with a torque converter. Do torque converters fail very often? Just gonna reuse mine I think. The TC can and does fail. Mine failed - stripped the spline. I know of another one this happened to too. The lining of the lock up system wears out also - this is what commonly ...

read what i wrote i would be very surprised if the wasn't a performance gain. i know plenty that fit intercoolers and gain performance tho i don't know with your engine. a lot of the guys are chasing every bit of cooling they can, especially with water/air IC as they always perform worse than air ...

Re: D21 Water to air intercooler install
egts have absolutely no bearing on how hot the water in the IC will get. however the WI will make a massive difference to IC temps if its pre IC. you must be getting a fair bit of convection circulating the water. cruise at 5-10 psi and 18 psi up hill would boil straight water for sure and be near ...

Re: D21 Water to air intercooler install
I know it's cooling the IC well as if I don't use the pump you can burn yourself on the IC, but when the pump is on the IC is barely luke warm. it should be stone cold. i don't know your setup but running with no pump is very risky. would only take a short length of time to boil the IC and ...

Re: D21 Water to air intercooler install
it doesn't make any difference if the system is sealed or not, most pumps do not suck very well. i'll have to go dig up some of the threads on the guys testing it. quite right about those legacy pumps tho. i do recall a magazine (FF&R or hot4's) many many years ago making a boost switch/timer for ...

Re: Diesel Boys old terrano lock up solenoid mod
Hi guys Note: Do not lock the TC when the vehicle is stationary. If you do and then go to takeoff, you will shock-load the system, destroy the TC and Trans in no time flat. Just wanting to confirm something. Can I hold the trans in any gear regardless of how high or low the revs are? The aim is ...

Re: Diesel Boys old terrano lock up solenoid mod
I wired up the switch and it works great! Just a few more questions. Is it fine to lock the Torque converter in any gear? Also what is the voltage to supply to lock at anytime? Im very new to cars 1) I have used it to lock the TC in every gear. Gear changes are less smooth with the TC locked so I ...

Re: Diesel Boys old terrano lock up solenoid mod
So this only works in 4th (with the overdrive switch in the "On" position)? It allows you to use 4th without the torque converter locking up? And is that the right wire in the picture i have taken? 1) Yes 2) Yes - but be aware that this loads the TC and generates a lot of heat. (I have an oil temp ...

Re: Terrano trans question
Philip, can install a switch that locks TC to keep oil cool due to no slip as such which otherwise causes the friction heat. As i believe most the time the TC is slipping when driving, could be wrong but thats my understanding Spot on. Most of the heat in the trans is generated by the slip of the ...

Re: Terrano trans question
the oil expands a lot when hot an kills everything, I have seen it expanded to round 30-40mm past the hot high level on dipstick, once cooled back to normal but metal filing throughout. Some people have the mentality that trans and diffs don't need servicing an only worry about engine oil Surely it ...

ATP should light when your transfer case is in neutral and your gearbox is in Park.
It is to warn that you actually have NO park as the driveshafts are now disconnected from the AT.

I went in from the top, removed p/s reservoir & bracket from the body & pushed hoses aside to get access. I took the front right wheel off and went there. Wasn't too bad at all really - well compared to say a P10 Primera where it's on the LHS of the car and the only way to reach it is to remove the ...

Re: Cooling system staying pressurised
Hard case, one would think if the head was cracked or the head gasket was leaking then the pressure would have gone back out of the cooling system overnight via the leak/crack.
I guess it could be watertight at low temps but opening up at high temps.

Re: Trans Cooling Option
There is a post around (by Diesel Boy if I recall correctly) describing how to disengage the TC lock. I just modified that mod with a 3 position switch and put 12v down the wire to the solenoid as wjw says. Position 1 is normal, 2 disengages the lock and 3 engages it. So far, as one would expect ...

It toyotas you just have to switch the correct solenoid and voila.... you really want it setup so if you touch the brake it disengages though. I'd be interested to hear how your tests went and how you got it to work. Direct drive power from engine to transfer without the loss of power via the TC ...

Re: Trans Cooling Option
Maybe the issue is using OD ,, you want engine to rev a bit ....using OD maybe be making it labour & increasing temps. Intuitively 4th (OD) is not good, and testing confirms this. When I disable the TC lock functionality and use the OD switch the trans temp skyrockets. So in that sense you are ...

air lock asin there is a void in the cooler, and oil is only going through 1/4 instead of all of it, resulting in nowhere near the same cooling efficiency. Seriously - how would I know? All seems to be working fine - as noted only big hills towing a decent load give me any issues. It just seems ...
