Re: INJECTOR RECONDITIONING

Thanks for the info. How complicated is it getting them out and back in after recond?

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

Anyone suggest a good place for a wheel alignment? I would head to 4wd accessories as some have suggested above but will be difficult to get out to sockburn during the week. Any ideas?

IFS Surf ball joint spacers

Hey everyone

I have a lifted kzn130 surf and have been doing some reading on ball joint spacers to increase wheel down travel. Just wondering tho that with the increased travel is there a greater risk of damage to CVs?

Has anyone done this and is it worth thinking about?

Re: worsleys

Is this worsley on the port hills in CHCH?

I've got a surf with a 2" lift and 32 AT's - cautious beginner driver.

Cheers

Edit: Just read another couple of threads on this track. ha ha might give it a miss till i know what im doing. Might go for a nose tho (on foot!).

Re: Rear Recovery Point for Surf

I'd be worried about the tongue piece as a potential missile but failure of the whole bar probably would not be sudden as not all the bolts would fail at once. It is more likely that it would fail a couple of bolts or buckle the flat brackets rather than tear completely off the vehicle. I take your ...

Re: Rear Recovery Point for Surf

awesome stuff. Will have a crack at the tongue piece mentioned above and will post a pic, then take the truck in to have someone look at the bar. I know a welder or two but it might be good to get some pointers on a bash plate as well. Where are you based Tom? Are you interested in small jobs like ...

I'm Tom   Im with Rok on this one. Your idea of replacing the tongue will work but you wouldn't want to do any heavy snatching.

Gidday Tom. You do this type of work i take it? would a bit of angle bracing sort me out?

Re: Rear Recovery Point for Surf

I'd be beefing up the way that whole setup where it mounts to the chassis. As you say the lateral strength does not look good and the 4ishmm (I'm guessing) plate looks like it has already had sideways movement. Is that second hanger bracket only bolted to the draw bar plate? if so, and obviously ...

Re: Rear Recovery Point for Surf

Thanks for that (who is Tom?)

Will probably make up a 10mm flat tongue that i can either bolt a hook to or with an eye for a shackle. Can then swap out the tow ball tongue when going off road.

Rear Recovery Point for Surf

Hi, I have been searching around on the site for a good indication of what the best rear recovery point would be on my surf. was thinking about either a hook on one of the towbar end brackets just back from where the bar is welded on. But thought it might also be easier to remove the towball and ...

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

In chronological order

tyres
wof
tie rod

had the neg camber (maybe not as bad as it ended up) after tyres.

From some of the posts above it does sound like it could have deteriorated rapidly and I have taken that on board. Will try a 4x4 specialist in future for any alignment/suspension issues.

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

Ok i can appreciate the ball joint might not be that obvious but the neg camber was. People kept pointing it out to me and I kept thinking nope its had x y and z look at it so it must be right.

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

Ok, perhaps i am expecting too much. Still grates a bit that Miles did a tie rod replacement as a safety recall, then did an alignment that left it with the camber. I will stop moaning and fix it up before getting a proper alignment from a 4x4 shop. Any recommendations?

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

Yep tyres were done for WOF and was otp following the alignment which adjusted the camber on the lower control arm all the way and still was out. The tyre guys didnt give me the impression there was anything wrong with this. From the wear on the bj it looks to me like its been metal on metal for a ...

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

Yep I hear you and with any vehicle of this age and around 200kms I definitely expect bits and pieces (bjs, cvs, bearings etc) to be getting worn out. What i dont expect is that a WOF check would miss this sort of thing (not to mention the alignments).

Re: Unsafe Ball Joint

Should also have noted that shortly after buying the car I took it to a suspension outfit to get them to look it over. They had no comments. Should also have noted that the wheel alignment after the tyre fitting was free with the set of tyres and the other alignment was part of the tie rod fitting ...

Unsafe Ball Joint

Hey all I am new to 4wd and have recently bought a 93 surf and have been enjoying getting into a bit of maintenance on the beast. Bought it with a lift already done. Fully expected to have to do a bit of work on the truck particularly with regard to the suspension etc and anticipating a few bits and ...
