Maratoto closed for 2013 winter

The Maratoto 4x4 trails are closed now for the winter months. It is probable that in late Spring a vegetation trimming day will be organised. Some digger work may be done about then too.

Re: Wilsons Road, Woodhill , Auckland

It's a legal road that was opened up by locals to the annoyance of the forestry company and the Council. The forest land is being passed to local iwi when their treaty deal is signed.

Re: 4x4 National Park 2013

Thanks to all who participated in this year's event. A little dusty at times as predicted and with the dryness, not quite as challenging as some might have desired. There still seemed to be plenty of smiles however. The event donated $2790 to the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation (RARO) We are grat...

Well, with a day still to go before the entry deadline... the event is full. Route checks last weekend were a little dusty in places but the clear skies gave great views.

It might be good for a laugh but possibly it's time to rethink. "address public meetings attempting to force the public to accept proposed lvvta lift regulations and authority cards" Check what the LVVTA wrote in their Dec newsletter. The eventual outcome could be hard to swallow. http://4...

I guess the title is not as appealing as that of this thread, but hopefully some will have a look and realise the importance to future vehicle access to DoC managed public lands.

Re: The 42 Traverse Discussion Thread

Cameron, the vegetation is still 'close' on the southern end and does generate some pin-striping effects. Auck 4WD went through in January. To fix the overgrowing vegetation will require a significant effort. 25 people in November cleared 6 km at the Owhango end over about 12 hours and there is prob...

This event is filling up but we've one change and that's that the planned new property is not going to have its tracks ready for use in time. There will still be plenty of interesting four wheeling and landscapes, so get your registration form in promptly. Request one from info@4x4nationalpark.co.nz

Re: New WOF rules announced

It's amazing the time spent debating about something that the government has done that won't affect your four wheeling... while there is the question of the various DoC CMS that most certainly will affect your recreation! If everyone is hoping that someone else will put forward comments to DoC about...

Waitawheta track to close for maintenance from Feb 13

To allow the maintenance to continue on the track at Waitawheta (Taieri Rd) that started last summer, there will be machinery in there from 13 February 2013. The route will be closed for at least two weeks from that date, weather permitting. Please respect this volunteer effort.

Yes, WAMS is identifying a legal road. It would be legal to drive it if you are sure you are able to stay within the boundaries.
There are of course many 'conditions' that impact on driving unformed roads that should be observed.

With the DOC announcement that the 'road' is open they also comment on the submissions to the draft management plan. http://www.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/news/8124815/Molesworth-is-open Here was a chance for four wheelers to have really stood up for their recreation opportunities, but it seems...

Northland CMS on vehicle use

A friendly mob that drafted the Northland CMS have outlined their policies as follows. The section in 'bold' is my highlight to show the ignorance of the authors... DoC do not control unformed legal roads / paper roads! There's a lot of work needed to do to try and shift the DoC bias. Part Three—Spe...

DOC CMS drafts for Northland, Auckland and Waikato

All three CMS are released at once and submissions close 15 March 2013.
Anyone can comment
If vehicle use is not recognised in a CMS, it is not allowed in that conservancy! :!:

Re: 4x4 National Park 2013

With a steady flow of registrations coming in for this event, it would be wise to not leave it to the last minute as there is a limit on the number of vehicles that can be accommodated. Enjoy, if you wish, the comfort of the Park Travellers Lodge as our base and then the four wheeling around Nationa...

Clearing the 42nd Traverse is not the responsibility of ORE members any more that any other 4x4 group, it's just that it seems to be others that do these things. We do try to motivate other types of users but they are mostly individuals rather than members of groups that we can reach out through. Th...

That's true, but there are some 6889 members of this forum who didn't take the risk of contributing their effort last weekend, so they remained safe. Re: 42nd Traverse vegetation cut back Nov 10-11

Managing maintenance in the peak use season is difficult and DoC with their safety management requirements are unlikely to support such an exercise in summer. Even in early Nov we had a steady flow of mountain bikes and motor cycles coming through our work areas, which meant managing that and the us...

The cut back is happening this weekend and hopefully will be well supported. To allow vehicles into the track, some repairs are planned which will divert effort from the targeted work. Ruapehu District Council have offered use of road sweep gravel stored in a dump at Raurimu, that will be bagged and...

There is a faint continuous line that is 'browner' on the original pdf and that is recognised by surveyors as defining a road. The better pdf is over 2mb but can be emailed if required.

Rainbow Road is a public road

Representatives of Public Access NZ (PANZ) have been researching and getting opinions from qualified surveyors about the real status of the road running from Lake Tennyson to the north of St Arnaud, known as the Rainbow Road. So far all opinions identify the road, as marked on the attached survey ma...

Re: 42nd Traverse vegetation cut back Nov 10-11

In discussion with DoC about the coming maintenance, they advise that the route suffered damage at the Owhango end over Labour weekend when around 20 4x4's used the track, despite its closure until 1 December. The work weekend is still all go but access may be slower and a little restricted. DoC are...
