Re: Name that part!

Ah cool. I didn't see anyway of opening it up to check it or anything but then I didn't actually take it off and have a proper look. Guess I'll just leave it where it is then!

Cheers.

Name that part!

What's this? It's in my front right wheel arch and has two tubes running from the top of it into the engine bay somewhere.

Re: Cracked Head Photos, Prices, Warranties

I'm taking careful measures to ensure things stay cooler in the engine bay. Even this will help a little I reckon! Surely it'll breathe a bit easier now...

Re: Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

Yeah tgaguy has a point. NZ 4WD Forums or something. I'll change the banners to that if you like. Madaz, good work! I didn't think of doing that! Mike, awesome. The banners I put in these posts are only at 70% size so if you enlarge them they'll go fuzzy. Use the larger ones on http://www.photobucke...

Re: Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

I'm quite into 3 and 8 at the moment ... but 8 might be getting a bit too arty for the masses! I should try and find another river crossing one as a few people seem to be into 1. Not tonight though! Time to hit the sack. I might actually go play with the real thing tomorrow instead (by that I mean t...

Re: Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

Thanks nzhunter. Might be worth saying "1" and "8" though as I keep adding them to the same post (post 1) so that they're all in the same place. Tomorrow, the bottom one could well be embarrassingly bad and you wouldn't want to be associated with it

Re: Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

Cheers. I've added another montage and then another one that's more text focused. I think I'm edging towards the montage with the spacing rather than the blended-in montage. Might try a few more of them. Still half an hour before the fiance gets home and tells me to stop messing around with photos :...

Yeah that'd be pretty cool. I'd just like to add that this hasn't been endorsed by forum admins and creators yet! I'm just kinda making stuff up as I go!

Re: Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

Madaz you're a legend. There's some good pics on that site. I'll have a look through. I'm at home with a beer now so I can work harder!

Albundy, good idea. I'll figure out some kind of montage option as well.

I'll just keep editting the first post with them so they're all in the same place.

Re: Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

Cheers madaz. This is like 3 minutes work so I might have a play around when I get home and get access to my own photos! I reckon something would look smart with a truck riding over the text or something. The sandy pic is from BrentC and the river pic is from NJV8. I just cropped, adjusted and put t...

Time for a new ORE Forum banner?

Hey all, What do you think about people posting some ideas for a new Off Road Express forum banner? I've been playing with a couple of ideas while I'm bored at work! I've totally butchered a couple of people's photographs to make these but I know who those people are so I'll ask permission before th...

Re: Cracked Head Photos, Prices, Warranties

It's ready!! Sweeeeet.

It was cheaper too - $4150 as they did it quicker than they thought they would. Now I just have to go pick it up and take it for a running-in session. Can't wait! :D

Re: Cracked Head Photos & Prices

They generally cover anything that is "sudden and unexpected" i.e. if the problem couldn't have knowingly been prevented. They also exclude all rubber - tyres, belts, hoses etc. and anything that breaks through standard wear and tear. I had a subaru that overheated, blew the radiator and d...

Re: Cracked Head Photos & Prices

Yeah I was offered a warranty for just over a grand. I'd had a warranty on the car I had before this one and I just thought, nah I won't need it. Apparently I was wrong! It wouldn't have covered the cambelt, radiator cleaning or injector servicing though. Chopper01, I could also buy my fiance...

Re: Cracked Head Photos & Prices

Just the head, bolts, gasket kit and head machining comes to about $1,365 plus labour. Did you get all the extras done at the same time? The wise thing to do would be to get a second opinion but it's already in pieces across the mechanic's floor so I'd have to get the guy to put everything back toge...

Re: Cracked Head Photos & Prices

Yeah I dunno. A few people have mentioned that. I was a bit hastey though and the mechanic's already got the head from Auckland and is installing it all today. Mates have said that I could have got a second hand engine for that price (my mate's 3L blew up at the same time and he's got a 96 engine th...

Re: Cracked Head Photos

Haha Toyota obviously don't want you to know about the damage until it's too late - then they get more business when you come to them for parts! The mechanic says they'll fully clean out the inlet manifold when they do the work, as well as remove the radiator and give it a proper clean. Just need to...

Re: Cracked Head Photos

Cryo treated? Did he put a second hand head on? This one's new. I've just got the quote. I've asked them to do a few other things as well and boy does it add up! 1. Cleaning & Sealers - $30 2. Cylinder Head Assembly - $859.97 3. Head Bolt Set, Gasket & Gasket Set - $243.29 4. Injector Servic...

Re: Cracked Head Photos

True. Ah well, looks like I'll just replace the head and get the cambelt done for now. And then I'll just be careful how I drive and take a break every now and again.

I really wanted to use it to head up to Golden Bay at some point. Hopefully it doesn't throw its toys in the middle of nowhere!

Is it worth putting in one of these? Looks like it's within my price bracket and easy enough for me to install! Or is it just a waste of time: http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/auxtemp.htm

Re: Cracked Head Photos

Which do you think would be the best preventative measure to stop it over-heating again? Considering I'm putting in a brand new head and a new thermostat. 1. Replace the exhaust with one with better air flow 2. Clean out the inlet manifold and install oil catch can 3. Change driving style 4. Improve...

Re: Cracked Head Photos

Cheers Fitzy and Tweake, Yeah I started another post about that not long ago - when I took the top metal pipe off above the head (the one with EFI written on it that connects to the turbo - is that the inlet manifold?) it was quite oily inside. I didn't realise it helps cause over-heating. I'll have...

Re: Cracked Head Photos

Hey all, Thanks for all the replies! I've been away for a long weekend and just got back. Yup you got it. It's a 1993 2.4Lt Turbo Diesel, 2L-TE, the SSR-G model. The mechanic is pricing the job at the moment. He's already got a new head in from a supplier in Auckland but thanks heaps for all the inf...
