KZJ71 problems - good diagnostic mechanic in Wellington???
Hi... After spending a few months deciding what sort of 4WD to buy I finally purchased my new pride and joy to be and -Boo Hoo, woe is me -my nice new Toy Motor barely made it up the road before it started stuffing out... Just bought a very tidy, unmolested, low milage (relatively) and well maintain...

For carpets try Autodec - can't remember their contact details but I'm sure a quick google will find them. They seem to have patterns for most things.

78 series LSD - was it a standard feature?
Hey all Can someone educate a dumb noob please... Did 78 series cruisers come with a rear LSD as standard and if not would there be any markings on the diff to identify what type it is? I'm looking at buying this beastie if the price dosen't get silly - a very tidy and unmolested little cruiser with...

Re: 96 Prado with petrol 3.4 V6
Hey thanks guys that's just the sort of feedback I was hoping for. Now I understand the Prado will use more gas being a full time 4WD as opposed to the Hilux's part time 4Wd. Anyone have any idea how they compare?

96 Prado with petrol 3.4 V6
Hey all. I've been looking at 4WD's for the past few weeks trying to figure out what I like and what suits my needs and have ended up with a short-list that includes 2 1996 SWB Prados; both have the 3.4 litre V6 petrol, ones an auto and the other's a manual. I'm just wondering if anyone has any word...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Awww......Shiny...... Might have to have a look-see at that one. - Actually I had heard that one was coming up, didn't realise it had hit the site yet- Eeekkk 20L/100K...! Definitely for the weekend.... Still, a lot less likely to cost me my marriage than the Prado I've been lusting at lately. I'll ...

Re: Greetings from the UK!
Another link that might be handy if you want to buy a vehicle while you're here is:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/
E-Bay never really took off here and TradeMe is (by a huge margin) the largest trading site in NZ if you want to get an idea what the second hand vehicle markets like.

Hi Marcus. Try the link below which should take you to the "Walking Access Mapping System" website which features an interactive online map showing all publicly accessible lands and roads in NZ. You can zoom in on areas, print off maps, even download .gpx files for a GPS or smartphone from...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Yeah I think I know the one you mean - had a different coloured bonnet? Now that one really would fall into the weekend toy category for me (just on the running costs alone), whereas the Prado I pictured above I could live with as a daily driver and sell to the Senate Finance Comittee as having save...

Re: What to do when a spammer hits the site
Admitedly a bit off topic, but check this out. 1.) Last week I googled Car Insurance in NZ to look at prices for insuring vehicles when used off road - Yes I was logged into Google. 2.) Went to a few NZ based websites to look at insurance prices ***without entering any personal information at all, n...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hi. Thanks for the steer. The one with all the offroad bits and bobs looks just like the sort of thing I'd be into buying for a weekend toy only 2 probelms though. First and foremost I'm in Wellington so viewing would be a bit of an issue and I'd never buy a vehicle sight unseen and secondly althoug...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hi again JDub. Well for the one I listed it's mainly the price. Other 3rd gen Hiluxes are selling for quite a bit more, anywhere from about $8K - $12K depending on milage and condition. I've heard a lot of people say that once the head's been done (with the proper improved Toyota head) that the engi...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Yeah I've thought about the double cabs but I figured if I go for something with a solid front I might as well go all the way and get a SWB cruiser. I got hold of the guy selling the Hilux and I'm going to go and have a look at it tomorrow. He thinks a previous owner did the head at about 200k but n...

Seeking a 4WD in Wellington.
Hi all. I'm in Wellington and looking for either: a reasonably tidy 4WD suitable for use as a daily driver and for occasional outings with the local 4WD club, or a cheaper 4WD just for use as a weekend toy. I need something I can fit the family in so that rules out anything without rear seats. I'm b...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hey all. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's taken the time to respond to my post and share the benefit of their experience. It'd be a lot easier to decide what sort of 4wd to get if I wanted it only as an off-road toy or only as a daily driver. I guess if I want something that can do both I...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hi JDub. I was thinking about a Cherokee because they're so damn cheap that I'd easily have enough cash left to spend on kitting one out, and they do have that solid front axle on them which is a plus offroad. I've even taken a couple out for a spin and after driving them I'd have to say that for my...

Hey Blake my last poat was before I read yours, thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed reply.
I thought this one looks like a good deal I suppose weather it is or not will come down to the service history the seller can provide.

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
OK thanks for that. There was an older (130 series ?) surf on Trade Me for sale alreay fitted on with a lift kit, mud tyres tyres and quite a nice ARB (I think) bullbar with a winch. I think the guy was in Wanganui and wanted about $6 and a half K for it. I would have snapped it up if it had been a ...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hey all thanks for the replies I'm starting to get a better idea of the sort of beastie I'll be needing. Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hi Mudlva. 'Scuse my ignorance but I'm not sure about the model numbers. I think the KZ is the 3 litre diesel. Is the 185 the model that came out in 96? To be honest the main attraction for that model for me is the more station-wagon like rear tailgate which seems a lot more user friendly. By that I...

Hi Jase, thanks for your reply. I hear what you're saying about the ABS and airbags. I had wondered about how all the modern safety gear affected things when the going got tough. I had been looking at the mid-ninties Prados and the like but I'd still need to throw money at them to make them suitable...

Re: Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hi Smokey thanks for your reply. Basically if I spend more than $5 or$6K on a vehicle it'll have to do double duty as my daily driver and weekend toy. I've thought about maybe a Discovery or a Cherokee as a weekend toy because they're so cheap and would leave me a bit more cash to throw at them for ...

Newbie from wellington asks would you buy this?
Hi all. I'm from Wellington, new to the forum and I'm looking at getting into a bit of off-roading. Nothing too serious, no winch challenges or anything like that, just going out with the local 4wd club on their "family shiny" or "shiny 4x4" graded trips. I'm looking for a vehicl...
