a lot of small 4x4 tractors run a portal on the front diff
you might find its a cheap build if you start with the right parts
5-10k?
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

yeap, a couple of early polaris tractor axles would do the trick

this might be a stupid question but what is the point of them? do they just gear the axle down?

They lift the diff up above the line of the axle/ wheel centre.

giving you a heap of extra diff cleaarance on smaller tyres
