Cromoly tube

Postby nivaman » Mon Aug 06, 2018 11:29 am

I am in need of some cromoly tube.
Size is
9.500" long, .750" outside dia, .188" wall thickness.
Where is the best place to buy it from?, has anyone got a piece in these dimensions?.
Thanks.

Why chromoly? Which chromoly? Would stainless work? What's the application? a 12ga pistol? are any of the given dimensions optional, ie are you just matching existing, or could it have thinner wall? Does it need to be seamless?
A bit pedantic, but specifics never hurt...

4140 is prety common in engineering situations, 3/4" OD should be stock, but that's pretty heavy (and odd size, you may find 1/4") wall. I'd go and have a dig through a boatbuilder/coachbuilder/fabricator's scrap bin. If you find something near size then a few minutes on a lathe will get you on spec. But then it may need heat treating or stress relieving depending on the application...

Cardwells have a good range of cromoly tube, looks like .156" might be the thickest in 3/4 though. They used to sell by the foot, give them a call.
