well, gonna build a car for next years winch comps for the south island, so far i have a new spaceframe, rover 3.5 bolted to a hilux 5 speed with rangie flywheel, pressure plate...... , hilux diffs and a hydraulic winch which i really want to use, to start the ball rolling is there a pto transfer case i can use, or adapt? throw all your wild ideas at me, i was going to run the winch off the crank but the old rover just doesnt have enough grunt

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
yep throw the rover away and get a chev shit load more reliable and easier to mod . use some thing like a blower pully off the crank will be good to see photos of the build
cheers

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
How bout a Rangie box and TF as well, then you can run your hyd winch pump off the pto, or mebbe a cruiser pto TF. You can get Hilux TF's with a PTO spot, but getting the unit that blots to it is the hard bit, it needs one of these

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
i've got one of those plates on the side of the transfer case in my lux at the moment. I was under the impression that i could not get a pto unit to fit, if one was available for me i would do that.
The whole idea of the buggy is to be super simple, it has good carbs and hei dizzy, super simple and easy to waterproof.
Have seen pump setup running off a chain off the crank, pump needs to flow around 70 litres per minute and a belt would slip(maybe a wide toothed belt would work)

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
The PTO unit is avaliable from an outfit in Italy OFMB
http://www.omfb.it/web_eng/catalogo/scheda_prod_leg.asp?id=06700500139&f=134&r=16&l=174&lingua=ENG
I tried to get a response out of them but had no joy, dunno if theres an OFMB dealer in NZ or Aus.... The unit pictured "looks" like it might fit, but its hard to tell without more info. I kinda backburnered it when I went with that crazy PTO system I came up with....and thats backburnered as well

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
sent those guys an email, not too hopeful though, will probably be cheaper to use landrover gearbox and transfercase and pto as one unit. Anybody got one?
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
Hey Swamper, C&C Hydraulics in Tauranga could get those ptos, i was looking at them when i started my project.
Might be worth giving them a call

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
received an email yesterday, turns out they do but it is for the toyota dyna gearbox, unit was 1600 which isnt that bad, talked to dp down here in invers, he was running a fast hydraulic winch off the crank in his cruiser but has taken it off, him and i will probably do a deal

Grab Donald's entire setup...pump, motor, crank drive and winch etc. It is a seriously good setup!!!!

Whats Donald running now?

Nothing. He's removed the winch and I think given up winch challenges for a bit to concentrate on new projects. Shame really, that rig of his is sweet!
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
offroad racing, he has lowered it, getting coilovers etc... he found the winch challenge series too short, wants to wind his out for long periods and get a huge rush, seriously thinking about getting his setup, but then i will have 2 hydraulic winches sitting here, watched donald at the catlins rally on saturday and his car was my favourite vehicle there

swampa wrote:seriously thinking about getting his setup, but then i will have 2 hydraulic winches sitting here
If you get the complete setup, you might want to think about a different power-plant. One of the reasons he supercharged the Lexus was because the winch was stalling it out.
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
if i get this setup it will go on my lux which has the exact same motor setup as donald, if someone has an email i could send some pics and they could post them for me

Thats pretty cool swampa, bet it uses less gas than mine too
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
Looks like it needs some cool 4" flared fibreglass front guards tho!

Yeah, have you sent them yet?
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
went for a drive down the beach, put 20l in probably went 10km in a straight line and back and definitely used more than 20 litres, have been spying up those flares too, blew a shock yesterday to, one of those rancho's 9000 adjustable ones, found wanting at prolonged high speed over rough corrogations
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy

I used to think the rancho's were the ducks nuts but I have heard nothing good about them on fast corrugations, they like things slow. They seemed fine on my zuk at low settings cruising around but they wont be the shock of choice for my next project. Problem is I cant get flashy shocks with reservoir (or whatever's) for the front struts, so I guess I will have to wait a bit for high speed fun (or carry several spare struts).

Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
i was in a area dirt bikes are aloud to go so i gave it a boot full, had it cruising at around 140ish, didnt notice what had happened until i had hopped out, getting coilovers and bumpstops for it anyway so i'm not to concerned
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
anyway abit about this car of mine, the rear is a 5 link setup, all safari arms, 4.88 diff and arb locker, the front as a simple 3 link, prado arms and safari panhard rod, all the steering is 70series cruiser, as with the rear the front is 4.88 diff with arb locker, all in all the suspension is simple, if i break anything i know exactly what to replace it with

I think I might have killed another pair of ranchos in the front of my truck... so I'll be looking at something else...

i think the rancho,s are a good shock, they have suited my needs so far and for a club truck they are fine, but as we want to use the lux for speed comps, coilovers are the way to go for us, which ones? havent decided yet

Not to burst your bubble, but for a vehicle that is built for speed work, by-pass shocks have the potential for better performance than coil-overs.
Coil-over are similar to conventional shocks in that they are only velocity sensitive, but they do have the added benefit of having additional reservior capacity and allow you to mount the shock and coil in the same plane which is great if your pushed for space like on a Hi-lux.
But by-passes are position sensitive as well as velocity sensitive and have much greater potential for fine-tuning.
Ideally, coil-overs plus by-passes plus bumpstops would be the way to go, but thats a sh*t-load of coin! Bypasses with conventioanl coil plus bumpstops would be the next best arrangement and easier on your wallet. They will give you the best performance with the exception of big whoops / g-outs where big suspension droop is prefered...but this aint gonna happen with a conventional coil.
Something else to think about is the tuning of the coil-over. You can make a good guess on what your spring rates should be (2 springs per coil, therefore 2 different rates), but if you get it wrong its gonna cost you another $150 per coil ($1200 each time you have to respring the 4 coil-overs)
Re: building a outlaw class comp buggy
didnt burst my bubble, the bypass ones are the ones i want, all coilovers to me, need to get each corner weighed then decide on the ones i want, if i do a sweet suspension setup i wont pursue donalds winch and stick with electric, got a figure in my head as to how much i want to throw at suspension, that wont last long
