shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
i thought id show you what ive been doing when i get bored haha this is a spare rear housing for my dads GQ nissan that we are going to put under it when it comes back home which should hopefully be in a few days
heres what it started as
these show kinda what it looked like
my good friend the hole saw to move the drain hole so i didnt cut it up
housing all cut up, no going back
just a test fit
bent up and welded together then painted
so all i have to do now is move the shocks up to stop them getting caught
(not that it ever has cause its got 37s and soon to be 40s or 42s )
so it gained about 17mm at the back and 14mm and the front which is nearly equivelent to having tyres a inch bigger.

Now this is an interesting concept to gain more clearance under ya diff. IOf you are ever bored down chch way I have two diffs you could shave for me. Looks like a big job though.

Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
it wasnt that big, it was like 5mins to strip, 10mins to cut, another 10mins to tidy up, 10mins to cut and bend the plate, 10mins to make it fit perfectly, 5mins to weld then paint. so it would have taken around about an hour maybe a litle bit more
Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
will you still get the same amount of fluid in there or will the filler hole need to be moved higher?

Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
its only lost about 15mm of depth so that wont be a problem
Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
if its a road truck be aware you do warp the housing doing this... I've done a few and the worst one moved 10-12mm off line
There are ways to limit the warpage like doing short stitch welds and letting the housing cool between welds
I've now got a jig to measure and true them
Cheers Reece

Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
how much oil is going to be left in the housing with the drain bung that far up the housing compared to before...looks like a fair bit?
toymota thats stock standard.
Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
If your concerned about that just swop one of the bottom studs for a bolt and use that as a drain... its whats normally used as the drain when you do this, when I do it I drill out and tap it for a larger bolt

Com-on AL, I thought you where a Unionist, if cool_bananas wants to do those sort's of jobs in under an hour where is that going to leave us port worker tradesmen, and the tradesman that helps him, and the guy that watches for fires after the welding is finished, and what about the cup-a-tea person ,

nice job I like it
something I've been wonting to do for a while myself esp on the front diff.been waiting till I get a locker of some sort, fit that, replace swivel seals, shave diff, brace front etc all in one hit.
I've been told you can get 18-20mm off front diff,18mm doesnt sound like much but shit it makes a differance.mind you 37"+ tyres well help
Have to fit manuel trans first

Hey cool_bananas. Nice work !...
I have an auto and when I go up to 35" or 37" tyres I will need to change the diff ratios to probably 4.88's . With a set of 4.88's in how much room would be able to be shaved off the pumpkin.
Cheers

different ratio crown wheels have the same diameter just different angle of teeth on crown wheen and different pinion size (im 99% sure). But its heaps easier to change the transfercase gears than the diffs, we run 37s with low transfer gears.

Can someone post a build thread on changing transfer gears. I'd be interested to see how hard it is - and where to get reduction gears plus prices.
Cheers,

Yeah! I have got the low ratio transfer gears to ( brilliant in the auto ) but it is the gearing on the road that will be far to high as it is currently pulling only about 1900 rpm at 100 kmph.

Re: shaving a rear GQ nissan diff
Digging up an old thread here but I'm with you Fitzy! Doing this job in under an hour seems completely unreasonable! I've just done a front and I reckon I have way more than an hour in doing the shave side of things (also did a lot of bracing and diff guard at the same time). I'll do the rear eventually and I'll be stoked if it's an hour job!
