Re: V8 Land Rover project
Another trip under the belt and I have decided my vicious fan is a little bit lazy. Turns on between 105 and 110deg C and would rather it turned on between 100 and 105.
Then when driving up hill with the temp sitting on 105 waiting for the fan to come on, fark smoke every where! The oil pressure line to the oil pressure gauge melted and sprayed oil onto the exhaust. Plugged it up and went away again but think I will go for an electric setup this time.
Disabled the altitude compensation in the MSII and it ran much better but did end up slightly on the lean side on the top of the hill. So I think I will re-enable it but back it off to about 1/10th of what it was. Think that requires some custom coding...
Hopefully getting it in for a cert check next Thursday

Re: V8 Land Rover project
Cert inspection done. Peter Watson did it at Garry's Garage in Cromwell.
Didn't get pulled up on anything
Now I play the waiting game and at some stage a cert plate should get sent to me.
Final step is a compliance check which I plan on getting Westside Compliance in Dunedin to do. Then it will be all legit

What does that involve?
Re: V8 Land Rover project
Its the check they would do if it was standard and I was getting it back on the road.
Except in this case, all modifications needed certified first.
Because there were no safety, emissions, noise standards etc in 1959. I'm guessing the main thing they will check is the structural integrity of the chassis and body. Then brake performance etc.
Then it comes out of it with a WOF and rego

That's great newz you're getting it sorted.. I'll be doing the same thing with Pete too, Is dunoz the place to go for compliance? as Mine will need a either a re-vin compliance after cert.. and was going to take to vegas to get done..
Re: V8 Land Rover project
Vegas?
I think Graeme Fitzpatrick used to do all the compliance checks at Westside compliance in Dunedin and I had heard good things about them so I figured I would just go there.
I already dropped it off there once to get a VIN number for it and they were easy to deal with. I think it is a guy Carl from VTNZ that does the actual check.
I think there is another guy at VINZ in Dunedin.
Just venturing around the backyard until the cert plate turns up...

Cert plate was rivited on. Drove to dunedin to Westside compliance. Body repair cert from action panel beaters, adjust handbrake, adjust front wheel bearings declaration of ownership. Wof sticker slapped on. Drove to vtnz, gave them letter saying I could keep orgional plates. Waited 20 mins. Paid $120 for 6 months rego. Left fully legit! Drove to gas station

Out of curiosity why was the body repair cert required and what was it for?
Re: V8 Land Rover project
Rust repair in the drivers side floor near to the drivers side bulk head mount. I think any welded body "repair" needs to be certified by a panel beater approved to provide such certificates. I don't even think repairs need to be structural to require signoff. Any modifications certifier signs off however, this was a repair not a modification.
It cost $195 for the repair certification/certificate.

Re: V8 Land Rover project
Well, I've been using the landy a bit and fuel usage is surprisingly bad since it's only on 32" simexes. Thinking of going to a less agressive tyre but not sure what to change to. Also, what checks can I do to look into if the vacuum and mechanical advance are working correctly.
Anyway, I've got a spare set of V8 heads off jetboat44 to open up and plane. Thinking 10.5:1 CR. I was after some info about installing larger valves... Anyone know about getting the most out of Rover heads? Starting with 1996 injected.

what L/100km are you getting out of it?
Re: V8 Land Rover project
At a guess 25
Re: V8 Land Rover project
yeah that's drinking it have you got wideband o2 and good fuel ratio maps shouldn't you be down somewhere around 14-16L / 100km for those engines?
Re: V8 Land Rover project
Yep cruzing at 15:1 thats why I am thinking it might be timing advance. But anyway I will work on that.
Really interested in working some V8 heads. More torque and power!

Re: V8 Land Rover project
strap a blower on.. I know you want too and it'll use the excess fuel and double ya powa win win me thinks..
Re: V8 Land Rover project
gear ratio's to rpm's my v8 landy 1800 rpm at 100 k's
Re: V8 Land Rover project
Yea forced induction has crossed my mind, but at the moment I think I will just slap on some heads . I think it's doing around 2200rpm at 100km but it gutless as be cause of the performance cam which comes in at 2500. If I can't get an improvement, I might go back to a stock cam as well
Re: V8 Land Rover project
different cam's for different performance you might have to look at what your trying to achieve end of the day it's a 4x4 high performance are great on the road waste of time off road idling along.

I had the A series (mini engine) book of his many years ago. It was superb.

Re: V8 Land Rover project
If your cam kicks in at 2500 your running to low in the rpm range to cruise efficiently. Try cruising in a lower gear.
A big cam will have larger overlap and lift which will have lower vacuum at lower rpm resulting in poor fuel metering and atomisation which requires more throttle to keep it going. A spread bore carb would help or a smaller cam.
Bigger valves will make it worse unless you up the compression a lot then it will be really unsuitable for off road use.

Re: V8 Land Rover project
running 5liter with a cam designed for low down torque as well as good on road cruising running holly truck avenger 4bbl carb and slightly warm heads & extractors, cruise at 100ks 1800-2000 rpm and still able to wind the speedo off the clock. fuel is 15-17L-100k as well as good off road economy if your not to heavy with the right boot.
Re: V8 Land Rover project
I can get the speedo to the middle of the "P" in MPH. A bit disappointing as I thought with a supposed 150kW it would go right back to the start .
Taking it away this weekend (hopefully) so I'll get the missus to drive for a bit and I'll bust out the laptop, connect to the MSII and muck around with the fuel maps some more (they still need some tweaks). Want to start taking datalogs to look over later on.
Also going to check what the vacuum advance is doing as that will affect cruise economy as well. Might put the timing light on it and suck on the pipe, that should let me know what its doing in terms of max/min.
I've got an LT95 4spd with overdrive and it doesn't seem to make much difference, to fuel economy, if the OD is in or out. With it out about 2800rpm is 65mph and it's well onto the cam. Heaps more grunt so I tend to just drive it like that since it uses the same amount of gas .
