40 Series Buggified!
40 Series Buggified!
Well Ive been thinking about setting up a build thread for a while now so here goes.
For a couple of years Ive been building a rockcrawler now loosly based on a 40 series cruiser. I did start with a whole truck but as I progressed I started cutting out all the rusty/bent pieces and this is the result.... almost all custom. I am using the 40 series firewall and dashboard.
Specs so far are:
-Custom chassis and integrated rollcage
-Lexus V8 with cruiser 4 speed box
-Klune V dual transfercase kit (two stage planetry gearbox)
-Prado diffs with 4.51? gears
-Triangulated 4 link rear end
-Three link front end with panhard link
-Fox air shocks on all corners. 18" travel 2" dia on the rear and 12" travel 2.5" dia on the front
-Fox air bumps on all corners
- 37" M/T Wranglers
- PTO winch
I started building this truck while I was still at Tech so due to lack of time and money it did not progress as quickly as I would have liked. Then after moving to Chch from Wellington I lasted about 6 months before I just had to get it down and continue. I built the suspension and the rollcage in my tiny garage down there. Then work brought me back to Wellington so the barely rolling chassis followed me home in a container.
The already well travelled vehicle then got almost a complete rebuild because of a number of things that I didnt like. At this point the V8 went in much to my mates anticipation. The quality of build also took a step up partly because of my improving fab skills and im certain that the 24 hour access to a fully equipped workshop played a big part.
Anyway onto some pic's. Bare with me I havnt uploaded photos before so this could be a disaster.
Custom Handbrake
V8 Power!
Front shock towers
Shot of the rear to end the photos of today
As of tonight other bits completed include a custom short shifter to bring the gear stick closer to the driver and more welding...always more welding!
Ive got a few more photos but if anyone is interested in a specific piece or area I can always snap a photo or two or answer any questions.
Thanks for looking
David

Damn, that's a nice bit of buggy.... very jealous.
Reckon you should move the mounts for the top of your rear shocks higher to allow for more upwards travel out of those 18" shocks. Just my 2c.
Great truck

Re: 40 Series Buggified!
Cheers for all the replies guys.
Rear springs are pine haha! although not at final ride hight, going to add a few more inches yet. The air bumpstops will help with the limited amount of up travel.
To the chch crawlers - Its only 4 hours drive and a bit of a ferry crossing away so Bring it Awn!
Hope to have this thing road worthy but I wont be heart broken if the certifier says no. I didnt start out thinking bout having it on the road

Re: 40 Series Buggified!
Anymore updates on this Mean Machine.??
Re: 40 Series Buggified!
Should have a bit of an update this weekend. Ive been working on the gear levers and Trans tunnel. Photos To Follow in the weekend
There's gotta be some rocks round here SOMEWHERE!
Re: 40 Series Buggified!
-UPDATE-
Ok so Ive been working on getting all the levers in locations in which they both work and are in a comfortable spot.
When I positioned the motor/gearbox I wanted to have a decent rear drive shaft length because of the travel I knew I would be getting out of the rear suspension. To do that I made it so the front of the V8 was roughly at the same spot that the front of the 2f would have been. So therefore a shorter motor meant that the gearbox was foward enough that I didnt have any major issues with the dual transfercase.
This meant I had a problem
The Gear lever when in neutral Hit the bottom of the dash! and the last thing that I wanted was a really long gear stick.
This is what I came up with
I cut the gear stick down and welded a piece of tube that I had ran through the lathe. I used a universal joint off a steering shaft to be the pivot for the new gear stick welded on another piece of tube and the remaining piece of gear stick the I first cut off. Folded a channel to join the two tubes together. and Done!
At the same time I made a mount for the 2wd/4wd selector. I also had a bit of a think where I was going to mount the fancy fiddle brake lever. A CNC two way lever that I got from Poly Performance in the states. Real nice unit.
Sorry bout the cellphone photos
