What if I run two cables from the altinator, one to each battery?

What does a smart charge do? I am not after a VSR arrangement as I want both batteries to be drawn from.

I think most of the smart charge system are VSR's. Maybe an evencharger is the thing you need? That is a system that equalises the voltage between the 2 batteries so they get a full charge. A few guys used them when fitting efi V8;s into 24v Safari's as they could then just take the 12v power from one battery.
Don't some of the VSR's just put the charge to where you need it but the power supply is seperate? I'm not sure as never really went that far into that solution as I fitted a 12v and 24v alternators and 3 batteries in my truck to get around it.

From my experience with VSR's, they are arse for 4x4 use.

I have had one set up to keep my engine battery charged as priority, then charge the winch battery as secondary.

I flattened the winch battery, then it seemed that the winch tried to draw the current from the engine battery through the VSR and fried that. So ruined the battery and ruined the VSR. Can't say for sure thats what happened, but thats my best as to why they were both stuffed.

I now just run both batteries in parallel. No drama what so ever.

My thoughts are that a VSR is good for a house bus or motor home or charging a battery in your 4x4 that has accessories running off it like a fridge or work lights etc, but no good if your second battery is in a high load situation such as your winch battery.

There is a difference to what you would do in a daily drive compared to a winch truck or weekender. If not used much then I wouldn't worry about it and just chuck them on a charger even so often to give a really good deep charge but for a DD I'd want something that does it all the time.

But yeah winches just stuff up all the flash electronic stuff. Let's face it, you can weld 10mm steel with the amps a winch can draw!

Agreed with DB, I didn't fit a VSR as it cuts the second battery when it drops below 13 volts. I want the opposite! I want the 2nd battery for the winch. My dashboard volt meter didn't drop down to about 8 under a hard winch once I fitted the 2nd. And the Paj didn't start idling funny and the rev counter doing silly things.
Not my kind of ideal.

HI Mike,

Airborne one was near Mataura just off the back road, Climbing the back was down Catlins at Tahakopa, Stuck in the Wairaki River at Eastern Bush, Dropping down steep bank into Oreti river above Winton, and the last one was Bullendale.

The video clip was up near Te Anau.

 (go DB!)

So after a bit of underwater winching etc, and a bit more abuse at local events the winch just stopped, no lead or anything, just stopped.

Not a solinoid issue. Pulled the end cap off the motor and suspected a bad earth, tapped around the end with a jumper lead to earth and away it went. Did a few more trips  then it died again so did some investigation.

Warn 4.6 motors did have a bit of a rep for bad earths and I sorted this when it first stopped about 5 years ago. Got 2 more earths drilled and tapped around the brushes way back then......

Circled below is the only earth clamped piece on a factory motor, the rest is relied on the 'end cap' bolted on for a good fit.
Image

So we put two extra fittings on (drilled and tapped - 25mm screw)
Image

Since then the motor has been going great guns, solinoids became an issue to in went an integrated pack with 50mm lines
Image

And then just this last weekend when winching out a Toyota it stopped dead. I pulled the motor off and saw one brush earth a bit loose so went to tighten it, totally stripped and melted away
Image

Drilled and tapped both earth brushes and re-did the extra earth's and its away again, stronger than ever! Been a great winch once the 'issues' were sorted!

Kaney, this would be the one.....
