snug fit...
Re: Lada trails truck revisited
3mm clearance.... been doing em to that for yrs and haven't heard or seen a mark from where any diff has touched .... but that is 10mm that is bent in a press brake and welded with formed shape, it is going to take alot to bend it
Re: Lada trails truck revisited
I'd say there were Sherman tanks around with less bracing in the driveline than that!! Looks good mate, been reading your thread over the weekend, lot of time spent and a lot of very tidy engineering, very cool
Re: Lada trails truck revisited
thank you
looking forward to finishing it
Re: Lada trails truck revisited
a wee update
finished the shave n brace on the rear axle
While I was at it I did the front one as well
Started on the winch mount... a cross brace to mount the back of it off
Then the hook mount for the front sections
Then the lower bar for the bumper to tie the two hook mounts together and tie into the winch mount

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Winch mount done I've used the winch mount to tie in the bumper and hooks
Now to finish off the bar and start sorting the drivers corner panel work

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Here is the finished bar.... yep this is all it needs
What you don't see (because they arn't there yet) is two bars that will tie in through where the indicators sat to the suspension strut brace... so they will triangulate the top corners.... adding anything more into this is just weight
Had quite a discussion with my shed mate over this "its not strong enough, needs braces..." lol na

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Been busy with little bits that seem to take alot of time... like pulling the pedal box and brake master & booster etc
got the battery boxes sorted so that Rick can paint the back
Hopefully get the pedals mounted in soon and start on the bumps not looking forward to that one

A wee update still working on the toy
Since the bottom of the shorkle is way lower than the air box so Ive put a drain tap on there

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
any chance of some more pics of how the engine is mounted?
cheers if you can.

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Will do, going into the shed soon to do some more work on it
Been struggling with the front bump stop mounts, I never designed the guards to work with hyd bumps so it is a real tight squeeze lol
Just about got the passanger one sorted this shows how tigh, Im cutting through both sides of my moncoque guards to fit them... the bump cans will become structural
This is what I have to fit
After a bit of trimming
a bit of work on the bump can an some glue
all thats left is for the outer skin to be welded back on

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Been a bit distracted with other things to update this, Im a bit past this point at the moment but the camera batteries died on me and I kept forgetting to charge them lol
the finished bump
and to fill a request
I have stood the motor more upright to help the drive shafts clear and to give me more room in the cab.... due to the front axle swing the sump is going to be replaced with a custom one to allow a full size drive shaft instead of a solid one
the word I got from some of the trials guys was that you don't want to go too far back it doesn't climb well, opinions differed about the ideal from crank pulley just behind the front axle centreline to the max of where I have it, the closer to the front the more it will limit suspension travel due to UJ angle range on the drive shafts and length of the shaft
Hope this helps

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
A wee bit of an update been doing lots of little things like extending the steering shaft for rick, trim on the bonnet and drivers guard, tiding up rust, made the bonnet pins, drivers bump stop can, work on the exhust etc
All things that arnt exciting lol but take time
Rad is in, after alot of talk it is going in the back.... Going to put a bulkhead up behind the seats and over the top of the rad... when Rick has the fuel tank installed
Sorted the trans cooler lines, this turned into a bugger of a job.... I didnt have any tools for this dia line and being this close to christmas there is no chance of getting in tools till in the new year, so.....
Another simple job that took all day

Na just a club truck now.... the 35" claws sort of kick it out of class too
Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Console and engine cover frame, just a case of folding up the engine cover panels and screw them into the frame
Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Just about nailed the engine cover... been really enjoying this, I think I might have to do something like this in the landy
the rear has a cover to access the motor and trans and trans dipstick
Still got a bit to do on the drivers side gets a little funky to get the steering shaft through, Ive sorted my lines its just a case of building it

only people who have built something similar can grasp that

And no talk of battle trucks rick is mad enough to try it.... I dont want it wrecked straight after Ive finished it......

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
Engine cover is done... didnt have the camera but its cool lol just got the rad bulkhead and the cab is done, thats waiting on rick to get the rad back in
Start on the brake pedal tomorrow
Was hoping to have this at a state to hand over to rick by the end of the yr but the log boats are putting the pain on me to do a boat in picton or nelson between christmas and new yr
this is going to have to wait till I get back... sorry

You obviously know what I'm talking about, which means you're of similar old-fark vintage

hell yes. I went to see it at the savoy in town. It was a double feature with another NZ classic called "Wildman".

Re: Lada trails truck revisited
another wee bit done
and here it is with the bits bolted on
Now I'm in the process of making it fit into the lada at the right spot.... just a little massaging and it'll fit then its the throttle

There doesn't appear to be any danger that he'll turn the firewall inside out when he stomps on the brake pedal then Reece (well not from the servo/pedal mount anyway)
