My 80 matey restore

Postby fullthrottle » Thu Jan 13, 2022 11:24 am

Sick of F Book and the crap on there.... ORE is where things should be at.

So, on my plan is the progress of my 80 restoration. It was pretty much a clean family truck and over the years has had some fun in the bush. It's too expensive to keep bashing, so a restoration was on the cards.

Here's where I started out.... (Not to shabby)

So the journey so far.... Have gone a bit OCD, first started off by stripping everything from the bodywork to find any rust. Planning to do an open door respray.

Popped out the windows to find that rust. Most common in these 80's are the rear boot windows. bottom's of doors and front of bonnet.

Replatted the rusty areas and took back to bare steel sections that needed some straightening out...

While I'm at it, I might as well give the beadlocks a birthday...

Had some electric issues to also resolve, so I've fixed all those and added the new gauges.
Auto Gauge from Taiwan highly recommended. Never had problems with these.

Also added separate fuse holders to run all the aux toys.

Spent a fair amount of time cleaning up the front end to ensure no return of rust.

After a long break and back into the warmer weather, I've managed to get it fully primed and ready for the top coats.

Restoration of the trim. I've also resprayed all the grill, headlight surrounds, mirrors, and anything else in matching black.
Thought I'd keep the theme with the truck body all grey. (Inside doors and jams in 2k grey)
Repainted the window section in matching black.
All external barwork will also be in black.
Final external (closed door) of matching grey raptor, using the vari-nozzle gun. (Highly recommended if you want a nice even finish)

Yay, Projects.
Looks like an undertaking and a half.
I like the idea of the Raptor coating, We are considering it as an option later on when we get sick of the west coast pinstripe look on our KZJ Prado.
Good work, keep it up.

Ok, and here is the first look....

Finished spraying the Raptor and then proceeded to unwrap my late Christmas present.

The guy in this video was spot on. So followed his advice to get a nice clean finish.

https://youtu.be/5ZUlWlCKiSg

Highly recommend the vari-gun with an added gauge to ensure you maintain the right pressure. I used this gauge for all the paint applications.

20220116_113955.jpg

So that's a hell of a lot of paint combos...

- 2 pack Epoxy primer
- high fill primer
- etch primer
- 2k red, black and Grey
- Raptor liner

The finish came out awesome!
Nice clean lines from removing the masking tape.
Will post some more photos once I've put all the bits back on. But for now a rest and let it cure for 72hours.

Out testing the brakes. It's been some time since it was last out and about, but performing very well.

All the bar work is now in the garage getting a birthday.

Have ordered the clear indicators for the front and sides. Plus new dyneema winch rope, fairlead, UHF pole.

Hmmmm those clear indicators look good.
Be careful when ordering the side ones as there are 3 and 4 prong versions.

More progress today....
Winch and wiring, barwork and UHF aerial

Good lord, it might just about be ready for a WoF.
Would like to put the side trim and roof basket back on to complete it though.

Well after hundreds of hours on this, thought why not.....let's try a WoF so I know what else needs doing.
It's only been off the road and in the garage for 4 years :-)

20220225_153039_copy_800x444.jpg

And the verdict is....... not too bad really. Mainly things for a vehicle that's been sitting for a while.

20220225_190051_copy_1512x2016.jpg

Will get those sorted out quick smart.

Almost there people.....So the WoF update:

- All bulbs replaced for the Fog, Number Plate, Marker and noticed one reverse light was out......TICK
- Brake warning light, well it helps to top up the fluid reservoir......TICK
- Handbrake adjusted. This has the fix for the dog bones inside the drum done and then just adjusted the cable......TICK
- Rear mudflaps, got some conveyor belt offcuts and made some up. They can be removed easily......TICK
- Window washer ports cleaned out and working sweet......TICK

- To fix the front wheel binding and proportioning valve, I've gone a bit overboard and stripped out all the brakes. So now has, brand new front rotors, front calipers fully reconditioned, new proportion valve. While they were off and likely I may not need them, I've installed the new Terain Tamer uprated CV's and new wheel bearings.........so a big bloody TICK

Oh yeah, thought I would share the mudflaps.... Gees I love rivnuts, great invention, stainless, alloy, etc etc.

Anyway just added some alloy rivnuts to the original mounting holes and cut the old conveyer belt to shape, and bingo. Nice and tidy.

If you want some and are in Welly, Rubber Bits in Petone is the place.
