hydraulic winch

so I am thinking about a budget hydraulic winch for my disco 1 (3.9 v8) bush truck
is there a pto kit for an lt230 transfer case to drive an hydraulic pump ( I think I can get a pump easy enough)
there seems to be lots of ideas on the web but has anybody actually done this sort of thing successfully??

It would be better to run the pump off the front of the motor with a belt and electric clutch.

been done many times.
But not popular in NZ due to cost.
Maxidrive in Aussie had a nice set up for the LT230 but unfortunately Mal retired closing the business.

unless your in the industry and can steal everything from work "Budget" doesn't come into the equation when talking hydraulic winches

Hydraulics equals flow and pressure.
You can get flow off a v belt but any form of pressure can be a challange.
That said it is possible.
Pto either sprocket drive off the front or back is way of the engine/transmission unit is a lot easier to achieve pressure and flow combined.
Hydraulic will never be as cheap as a electic setup. But set up well they pull as hard as a pto but are user friendly as electric. Also by the use of pressure relief valves you can look after the rope a lot better

I am working for an engineering company that does hydraulics so although it's not my forte, there is an opportunity to buy at reduced prices through work.

I've done this a few times before. Once with original land rover pto pump and worm winch which was brilliant. Expensive even second hand.
Also used maxi-drive pto pump into a low mount which was ok but a lot slower.
Prefer electric now. Easier and cheaper and I do shinny 4x4'ing now.

Red winch make kits for landie's. complete set up, bolt on. My mate has just brought one of the flash 2 speed set up's from Phil at force4. We are hoping to have it running for NZ1 in November on a 90.
google red winch, and you will find them easily enough. Real popular in England, and phil was good to deal with also.

a straight bolt on to an lt230 is the way to go I reckon, at least it's a proven product before we start and it looks pretty compact. are you buying the winch as well or just the pump?

My 2 cents worth is if you dont have at least 3k to spend ,you need to go down another track .

and to add to this for 3k your going to get a pretty average set up ,wont be up to comp specs, to get a good strong fast winch expect to spend 8/9 k plus
