Swapping hilux external reg to internal

Postby Petemcc » Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:11 pm

My hilux has an external regulator which is the old mechanical style and keeps playing up. I have another alt with internal reg and was going to swap it.

Any body got ln106 wiring diagrams that show what wires a what on the charging system?

Cheers,
Pete

The plug for the reg will have 6 wires
Blue, to alt
Green, to alt
black, to alt
white, battery
yellow, warning lamp
black/yellow, ignition

You new alt should have a 3 pin plug labelled S IG L
Join S to battery, IG to ignition and L to warning light

When I did mine using a YN130 alt into a YN67, the wire colours actually matched up if I remember correctly (assuming you have the plug and loom that matches the new alt). Also check the main charge wire, some of the old external reg alts only put out like 35amp and have a tiny charge wire, compared to most newer alts that are in the 60amp+ range. I replaced this with the much larger wire from the 130 loom since I had it already. Also worked out handy for me as the old charge wire provided a perfect main feed in the correct place for my new EFI relays :)

aaahhhh google has not helped me at all. No reference to the internal reg alt having red blue white and my alt doesn't seem to have the S IG L lettering on it.

Can anyone tell me which pin is which??? looking at the end of the plug with pins pointing towards me and the the single pin at the top

Any help?

if its the alternator i think you have will be same as this,

if your running your own wiring run S to main fuse board or the location that takes the most current draw most of the time because if its run straight to the alternator there will be a slight delay under high loads  eg: lights dim when you turn something on before the internal reg notices a drop in voltage/rise in current

your plug pinout should still resemble the picture i posted

Horizontal pin being "S"(positioned at the top)

Ignition/switched power being the vertical pin on the left (horizontal pin at the top)

warning/charge light being the vertical pin on the right

(edited to match)

You are right. the top pin is horizontal and the bottom pins vertical. I have edited my prev post.

You say mine should be like the other one..How certain are you that you are right? Can anyone else confirm?

I haven't thought through what would happen if i wire it wrong yet.

If I hook the top/sensor pin and the IG to 12V I will soon find out if it's right. Shouldn't bugger anything if if put 12V on the lamp circuit.
makes sense to be the way you say.
