1kz-te - what is this hose for?

Postby rogerramjet » Sun Feb 22, 2015 3:12 pm

Hello all. Does anyone know what the hose in the centre of the photo is for. It comes from the air intake runs down towards the turbo where it splits off, one looks as if it goes into the back of the turbo, and the other looks like it plugs into something 'round' behind the turbo.
By pulling the hose off from the air intake end there seams to be an oily residue, is this normal? All the ends of the hoses I can see are split and I was going to replace them, but wanted to know what it did first. I have searched through the repair/service manual and cannot find any mention of it. Thanks.

Is the hose actually going into the black plastic air intake? If it is, I have a 1kzte 3.0 turbo diesel and I don't have that hose.
Not sure that helps!

Yes it is going into the black plastic air intake. I haven't seen it on any photos on the Internet either.

Bloody hard to get the camera in to take photos. In the photo below, the arrow shows the direction of the hose (which can't be seen in the photo) the circle shows where it enters the black round thing in the back ground (the termination can only just be seen behind the hose/pipe join in front of it.
The other hose I can't get a good photo of, but enters into the top of the turbo directly behind the air hose leading out towards the intercooler.
It looks to me that the two pipes that I have just mentioned are probably factory, but the one into the black plastic air intake might have been added. Would anyone know why?

the one in the first pic isnt stock. the fitting isnt oem, and no clamp suggests aftermarket. remove the lot and fit a decent catch can

I might be wrong but I thought a catch can went on the PCV system.

I have found a diagram that illiterates where the hoses terminate. Essentially someone has inserted a 'T' in between the hose from the actuator to the turbo and taken a new hose from the 'T' up to the air intake.
As I have no experience with turbos, what does the actuator do? And why would the extra hose be fitted?

I'm hoping that it isn't hiding a issue the previous owner may of had.

So whatever it is attached to, someone has thought that it needed more air at some stage?

From doing some more reading, the actuator appears to open and close the waste gate. Anyone with knowledge of turbos know how this setup would affect the operation of the wastegate?

if that goes to the wastegate line then someone has wound the boost up with what looks like a homemade boost controller.
i would stick a boost gauge on asap.

After some more reasearch it appears Tweakes comments are correct. Someone has tryed to up the boost by bleeding off some pressure to the waste gate actuator.
I think I will remove this extra hose and return to factory configuration.

Is there tap of some sort on the airbox end?
Maybe in the box?
If not would be best to do away with it and put a new hose from the turbo to the actuator.

Need a gauge to tell exactly what boost levels are.
get a exhaust gas temp gauge while you're at it.

EDIT. Beat me to it. Good choice mate.
