qd32eti possible auto fault....

Postby nickmcdonald » Thu Jan 30, 2014 9:57 pm

Hi all. Im having an issue with what I think is my auto trans. I drive a R50 terrano, qd32eti. My issue is as follows.....

When driving along and I go to slow down, BUT NOT COMPLETELY STOP, and then speed up again, my truck gives off this horrible clunk. For example....I slow down to go over some speed bumps, and then give it gas to take off again, the revs will rise but i won't pick up any speed. Then suddenly, theres this big as CLUNK as the auto drops down a gear and I shoot forwards.

It also happens at give way signs. Ill slow down to have a look both ways, but not come to a stop, go to take off again, and its the same old rev up but not accelerate, CLUNK, and then off I go. Sounds and feels unhealthy.

And on more than a few occasions when I jump out of the vehicle, I smell this horrible burnt smell. Much like burnt clutch or brake pads. Co-related?

Thoughts? Dont say expensive.......cheers!

Sounds like the torque converter to me. It will need to be taken into a good auto trans shop. Where are you based?
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Ughhh really? Im in Pakuranga, Auckland. The auto was rebuilt around 40k kilometres ago.....is the torque converter not part of an auto rebuild? If so, you'd think it would last longer than that!

Nah im almost positive its auto / torque converter based. I stand on the gas, revs go up, but I barely move...then THUNK, kicks down a gear and it takes off. Its almost like its stuck in too high a gear, gets fed revs, and doesn't want to kick down. And the smell......

My guess would be the pump is stuffed in the auto or the part that controls line pressure, line pressure not enough to clamp the bands or plates.... Then as the revs come up the line pressure increases and bang eventually it grabs... In the meantime its slipping like a bitch...
Is the fluid clean or dark? If its dark / thickish then the lining material has been stripped off....
Either way you are in for some pain in the back pocket.

Bugger. Yeah that sounds like a feasible scenario. Now I know what I'm in for, Ill get a specialist to have a proper look. Cheers for the feedback anyhow. This is turning out to be one expensive truck......
