how do i find out the diff ratio of my bighorn its a 1990 2.8itd, the plan was to solid front end and put cruiser 4.1 diffs under it and soa now that iv picked up some 36" simex im thinking the diff ratio wont be right. do i keep the rear bighorn diff and find a front to match or change both diffs for something else?

I older isuzu's are 4.5 which match up to the toyota 4.5 diff

Re: project bighorn.diff issue
Jack up the back wheels, count the number of prop shaft turns to one wheel turn (with both wheels up).

It would be easier to just put hilux axles so you can 4.8 diffs so you will get your gearing back from running 36's

Re: project bighorn.diff issue
Most of the 87-92 model bighorns are 4.31 diff ratio, though the R spec models in that range are 4.56.

Re: project bighorn.diff issue
is the spec r model the one with really wide guards? bin told by someone that if it has the 4.5 ratio it should be ok, can you get crawler gears put in if needs be?

i think this is the best option, not because they are better and im certainly not saying you couldn't make it work with the other one. but you need to consider the future, and look at how many different ratios and options there are about for hilux diffs. they are everywhere and easy to pick up cheap if you decide to change ratio in the future or smash one.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: project bighorn.diff issue
Yes the R spec model model is the one with the wide guards.
Re: project bighorn.diff issue
I did hilux in the rear as i had to go hi pinion in the front ( 4.8HP) i soa'd my isuzu one before we relised this prob, oh mine was on a mu, mine on 33s atm still goes hard,
SASed Isuzu Mu - hilux diffs, Rears up front, disc brake conversion, ifs hub swap, crossover steering, and legal!!!!
