MADMAX - Our J20
MADMAX - Our J20
Heres some pics of our Jeep, built by me & a few mates for hauling firewood & hunting. It's a 1981 J20. Mike found it rusting away in a paddock with a buggered motor so we rebuilt it with a Lexus V8 & 36" Super Swampers. That's Mike in the drivers Seat, he's the brains of the operation:
My idiot brother rolled it last year, luckliy we found another J20 on trademe & swapped on the cab. We also did a few more mods & fixed up some bits & pieces, so this is the 2005 facelift:
Cheers

Thats cool,
Is that the remians of 44gal drums that have made into seats for shooters up the front?
Whats the ride like up there ?
How do you dismount it when you are using the beast for other things ?

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
Actually 60L drums, the 44gal are a bit big. There are a couple of foam cushions that fit inside them too. The whole thing (we call it the 'Apparatus') is held on by 4 HT bolts onto some brackets on the the bumper. 2 people can take it on & off quite easily.
The ride is pretty good, we did a front shackle reverse to lift the jeep which combined with the big rubber lets it float over bumps really well. With the reclined seats & footrest bar you can wedge yourself in quite firmly.

Re: MADMAX - Our J20
About time for another Madmax pic I reckon.
The old Jeep hasn't had much action over the last couple of years, every time I fixed something on it, something else would crap out, but after resolving a few issues earlier in the year it has been behaving itself & going pretty well.

Talk about resurrecting an old thread!!!!!!!! 8 years on and it is alive again. Great, both the memory and J20.

excellent jeeps
Re: MADMAX - Our J20
...bit quiet in here. Our Jeep hasn't been though - it's firewood season so the hills have been alive with the sound of a straight piped Lexus V8

Re: MADMAX - Our J20
I love the look of the old J20 and Cherokee, A J20 that has been rolling about between a few family mates is getting a new lease on life at the moment. Good to see yours is earning its keep.

Green J20.jpg
That looks interesting, more pics & details please! What's the powerplant?
One thing to watch on the J20 is the front axle - if it's a Dana 44 like our one they are really a bit weak for the size of the truck. We grenaded a couple of CV's & a diff before realizing that we just had to drive it a bit more gently.

v8 tj...luvs the gas......
Re: MADMAX - Our J20
Mate put it up for sale but change his mind.
Has an injected falcon 6 cylinder in it. Falcon dash too from memory. Guy that started building it up bought it from my father in Law as a standard Ute with a flat deck. He had plans of road legal leaf sprung crawler type thing, lost interest after moving towns and sold it on to another mate/family member middle of last year, A few months tinkering to get it running but will just be a trailer queen now.

Cheers for the thought, but no way! We've learnt the hard way that 35's & a big truck on a Dana 44 is borderline as it is, locking it up would smash the diff &/or UJ's, axles etc in short order I reckon.
There's one on trademe now in Ashburton They are a classic shape. It would be interesting to know how many of them are still runners in NZ. I doubt there's any left with the original donk as the AMC 6cyl didn't have a great rep. There used to be a couple of others around the Eastern BOP that I'd see out on the road sometimes, one had a big diesel 6cyl in it, the other was a petrol V8.

Re: MADMAX - Our J20
Father in Law sold His 1980 Cherokee Chief 2dr wagon last year. Was originally petrol V8, he dropped in a Chev diesel V8, well two actually, first diesel put a leg out of bed, shattered the block.
Re: MADMAX - Our J20
Not the seller in ashburton I expected, there is a guy down there been playing with j20s and other jeeps for years , great to deal with
all good about the lokka, need to find it new home if you know of anyone looking.
