Currently in Aussie driving a Patrol, with full NADS, boost set at 16psi, pryo and boost gauges, 2 3/4 exhaust, uni-chip performance chip, 33's Pro comp MTZ's, 2" lift, rear air bags, warn winch, custom belly bash plates, duel battery set up, spot lights around roof rack, 60litre fridge freezer, etc, etc

Moving back to NZ, looking for a Hilux N70, duel cab 2008 onward, want to find out whats legal,

Whats a good club to join in the Wellington area? I've read you need to be a member of a club to have a 4' lift. is this correct and is any club ok?
Cant figure what being a member of a club is meant to achieve when you are driving on state highway 01, 80% of the time.

Don't have to be a member of a club to have a 4" lift, you can also legally run 35" tyres on road. Would pay to have your vehicle certed especially for insurance purposes. Certification here is simpler than Aust.

The club member thing for 4" lift came about because of lift laws implementation which didn't happen and it has gone back to the drawing board.

Since Cherokee KJ had factory lights above the windshield in New Zealand, they cannot be completely outlawed. However, it would depend on how the bar is wired to trigger and what it's for?

Approximately $450 for a full cert, think it depends on who you get as certifies here are authorised and you have to find someone in your area. Guys on here will know plus plenty of other info. All I know about bull bar requirements is that they can't protrude out a certain distance etc.....much like Aust etc.

You will find it much easier and less hassle to lift your 4wd here but they are looking at new lift laws sometime in the not so distant future. A Patrol/Safari and Landcruisers are barely looked at with 3-5" lifts AND 35" shovels, but there are other radical lifts that compromise safety etc and I guess that is why it is being addressed.

Roof mounted lights usually fall under the 'work lights' category (can't be switched to operate as part of main beam circuit). It's an offence to use them in a dangerous manner i.e. if you drive on a public road with your megawatt lightbar switched on dazzling other road users the police can charge you regardless of whether your lights are legal or not.

The law may be udated in the not too distant future and everyone's wondering how LED lightbars may be treated by any change in regs.

to answer your original question about why you need to join a club in wellington. I have observed over 30+ years that public access has closed up around the region to just a small handful of places to go - and at anytime these can have nasty signs, gates locked, boulders, concrete blocks or trenches dug by whoever/whenever. So it's not surprising that wellingtons cross country vehicle club was the biggest 4x4 club in NZ when I was in it. Great club with lots of trips
